This Swimming Spot Has The Clearest, Most Pristine Water In Maine

There is certainly no shortage of places to swim in Maine. For beach lovers, we've got that rocky coast interspersed with some lovely sandy beaches. For those who prefer being inland, there are plenty of lakes and rivers to spend a nice summer day. But, there's a special, pristine spot nestled in the woods that just might be our favorite. Without a doubt, this beautiful pool has some of the clearest water in Maine.

Located in Evans Notch, you'll find Rattlesnake Pool. This perfect swimming hole is hidden near Blueberry Mountain and can be found after a hike in the area. Sure, swimming holes are wonderful, but what makes this one extra special is the absolutely perfect water. The clear blue will make you feel like you're in the Caribbean and even just a quick dip will cool you off during these last few weeks of summer.

Getting to the pool requires a short walk. From Route 113 near town, head towards Stone House Road. This becomes Shell Pond Road. A few miles in, you'll find a gated area where you can park.

From here, head to the grass clearing. Walk through the clearing (while watching for ticks!) and you'll eventually come to the marked trailhead. Keep on the lookout - it might be hard to find the marker.

This area is private land, so you'll want to be careful to be as mindful as possible. Though the owners have granted access to the public, it's best to practice respectful hiking and leave no trace as you make your way along.

Once you've hit the trailhead, continue for about another half a mile and you'll see a sign for Stone House Trail. Make a left here and continue for another half mile until you come to a small footbridge on your right.

Explore the area of the footbridge and you'll see a bit of Rattlesnake Gorge. But, stay focused, skip the bridge and head on! The path will go slightly uphill here.

After continuing about another half mile, you'll find the path to Rattlesnake Flume and Pool. This trail is marked by a small arrow on the right.

The pool is absolutely spectacular. It's crystal clear and blue, with lush plants that make the area feel like a secret, tropical oasis. Well, until you jump from one of the ledges. Be warned, folks. This water is cold!

Once you've had your fill of hidden swimming hole fun, head back the same way you came. The entire round trip is about two and a half miles and worth every step.

If you want to make sure you're nice and sweaty before you arrive at the pool, hike the White Cairn Trail, which will connect to the Blueberry Ridge Trail. Follow the Blueberry Ridge Trail all the way up to the summit for beautiful views of the surrounding Evans Notch area.

Reaching the summit of Blueberry Mountain is best for experienced hikers. While not terribly difficult, there are some areas that will require scrambling over rocks. With an altitude of 1,750 feet, it's definitely a hearty hike. Round trip will be about 4.5 miles.

If you choose to do the pool on your way down, simply detour at the small sign before heading back to the car.
