The Little Known Hiking Path in West Forks, Maine, is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year
Kick off the year by following a little known hiking path that leads to the tallest waterfall in West Forks, Maine.
Many people enthusiastically make New Year’s resolutions, intent on forging a new path in the months ahead, whether finding a better work-life balance or spending more time outdoors. While I’m not a big fan of resolutions, usually because I don’t follow through, I made it my mission last year to go on more hikes, and I did. I chased waterfalls, walked through quiet forests, and stumbled upon abandoned ruins. If you plan on spending more time in nature in the new year, start with a first-day hike on this little known hiking path in Maine.
If you’ve lived in Maine for a while or are a seasoned hiker, you have undoubtedly heard of Moxie Falls Trail, the magnificent path in West Forks that leads to the tallest waterfall in Maine. But if you’re not from here or aren’t really into hiking, you’re about to discover a picture-perfect gem for your first hike of the year.
Getting to the Moxie Falls Trail is easy, especially if you put the address into your GPS. Travel along Moxie Pond Road until you see a parking lot. Look for a sign that directs you to the start of the trail. Simple. Short and sweet at 2.1 miles, the Moxie Falls Trail snags an easy rating, making it an ideal hike for families with children and leashed dogs. Be prepared for several steep sections and some stairs during your adventure. The trail can get muddy, too, so keep that in mind when deciding what hiking shoes to wear.
On a snowy day, you might want to snowshoe rather than hike. Moxie Falls Trail, which boasts a swimming hole, is particularly popular in the summer. However, the pretty path transforms into a proverbial winter wonderland during the coldest months. Consider bringing hiking poles if there’s a lot of snow, especially since the stairs do not have railings to help you go up and down.
As you trek to the tallest waterfall in Maine, you’ll pass breathtaking smaller waterfalls, well worth stopping and taking photos, a serene stream, and snow-capped trees. Stand on one of the viewing platforms to snap photos and marvel at the wintertime beauty of Moxie Falls. If you visit after temperatures have plunged, you might see it frozen mid-tumble.
