There’s something so special about hiking trails in Maine when the birds are singing, wildlife is frolicking; the breeze is flowing through the branches; and the beauty of nature surrounds you. Taking a day hike in Maine is a great way to relieve stress and reconnect with nature. One of the best trails for this is the Eagle Lake Carriage Road Trail near Bar Harbor.
When looking at Eagle Lake, you might not notice at first glance that there’s a carriage road encircling it that is a locally popular day hike spot. It’s nestled within Acadia National Park which does require a fee to access, but once there, you’ll find so much beauty to explore.
The Eagle Lake Carriage Road Trail is a six-mile loop trail that’s quite easy to traverse, making it a perfect family day hike with stunning views of Eagle Lake. You can bring your dog as long as they are on a leash.
Not only is Eagle Lake beautiful, but it’s also a great fishing spot if you wish to kick back and catch some salmon, trout, whitefish, smelt, perch, chub, stickleback, and several other kinds of fish. Head out on a hike and come home with dinner.
The trail is just as good for biking as it is for hiking, and there’s no wrong way to enjoy this gorgeous trail. While it’s best from April to October, it’s still lovely any time of year. Fall colors add an extra touch of splendidness.
When winter comes and the snow falls, this trail becomes a still, pristine winter wonderland that’s a joy to explore.
You’ll even pass under an old stone bridge for a touch of history along the way. This one was built in 1927 and was widened in 1974.
The variety of biomes is a special treat with wetlands, deciduous forests, and coniferous forests, you’ll find so much to love on this trail. If you're a birder, you're sure to find some pretty specimens on this trail.
