Editor's Note: Step Falls is incredibly busy between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from June to September, and the parking lot closes to additional cars once it is full. Parking is not permitted along Route 26, so please plan ahead and have an alternate activity planned if the parking lot is full.
The Step Falls Preserve hiking trail is an accessible 1.1-mile out-and-back trail in Newry, Maine. Good for all skill levels, the hike showcases many beautiful views and culminates in a waterfall.
The trail is well marked and traveled. Previous hikers have noted it's excellent for families because of the accessible difficulty level. A flat path leads to a set of forest stairs. Your efforts of climbing several flights are rewarded at the top.
Along the way, you'll see examples of Maine's rich natural landscape, featuring white birch, beech, hemlock, white oak, fir, and spruce trees. Dogs are permitted on leashes or under voice control. Hunting, campfires, and camping are all prohibited.
At the end of the trail, visitors are rewarded with a beautiful view overlooking a neighboring mountain, framed by the forest around you.
Swimming holes can be found throughout the hike which has the wonderful effect of lessening crowds at any one attraction.
Hikers have described this region of Step Falls Preserve as a natural water park. In addition to the swimming holes and waterfall, there are a number of smaller natural waterslides that are heavenly in the summer or after a long day on another trail.
AllTrails hiker Aaron Lockwood described the trek as a "short, forested hike on a well-worn trail with exposed tree roots. The falls were absolutely exquisite! The water was crystal clear and cold (but comfortable enough to swim)."
While gorgeous all year round, this area is particularly stunning in the fall. The viewpoint at the top of the hike offers picture-perfect New England foliage. Have you ever hiked this trail before? Let us know in the comments below -- we'd love to hear from you!
