When Is Berry Season in Maine?

alt

Picking berries straight off the vine is a lovely way to get in touch with nature and the connection between it and the food we eat. It’s like getting back to basics. They make my mouth water just looking at them!

The Maine blueberry season starts in late July, running through August, and usually stops in early September. The raspberry season can begin slightly earlier, starting in late June or early July and going into the fall.

Maine's Wild Blueberry Weekend occurs the first weekend in August, celebrating the state's official berry year after year. Celebrations occur at many local farms across Maine in this statewide event, making it an ideal time for blueberry picking. At the very least, be sure to try the blueberry pie in Maine this time of year!

What To Know Before You Go Berry Picking in Maine

You’ll want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and may want to wear latex gloves so your fingers don’t get stained. After all, berries are some of nature’s best dyes. Be sure to wear appropriate sun protection as well—hats and sunblock are a must when scouring Maine blueberry fields!

You can bring your own picking containers if desired, but Goss Berry Farm will also provide you with pint or quart boxes for free. Credit cards are accepted, but cash is the preferred form of payment for your berry haul.

You can bring home a ton of berries for a very reasonable price, and you’ll love making preserves, pies, and pastries, or just eating them as a snack. Imagine these on top of some ice cream! Be sure to freeze a bunch for smoothies and to put on top of your oatmeal or pancakes.
