The Rip Van Winkle Gardens are named this because they were originally owned by Joseph Jefferson.
Joseph Jefferson was a renowned actor of the late 19th century who was best known for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle on stages around the world. The home was built in 1870 and incorporates a wide variety of beautiful architectural elements.
Jefferson Island is known as an island because of the unique salt dome formations that are found underneath the land here.
This gives the area an elevation of 75 feet, almost unheard of in these areas. The gardens are absolutely beautiful here and lovingly cared for.
But a visit here is not complete until you visit Cafe Jefferson for lunch.
This amazing restaurant serves up traditional southern Louisiana favorites in a setting that you will not soon forget.
Crawfish Etouffee is amazing here, and has great spices and flavor.
