Louisiana is known for a lot of things, but fall foliage rarely seems to make the list... and that's a shame because Louisiana does, in fact, see the leaves change! Sure, it may not be the brilliant kaleidoscope of colors you would find in New England, but we do see the colors change. While the rest of the country sees peak fall foliage in the first few weeks of October, Louisiana tends to see the colors change towards the end of October and into November. The northern part of the state will see the colors change first, and we've rounded up some of the best state parks in Louisiana to do a little leaf peeping.
1. Chemin-A-Haut State Park
Perched on a high bluff that overlooks Bayou Bartholomew, Chemin-A-Haut State Park is beautiful year-round, but there’s something magical about seeing the fall foliage against the bayou. Rent a canoe from the park and set off on your own adventure for an amazing autumn adventure!
2. Lake Claiborne State Park
This 643-acre park has a beautiful stretch of beach that’s popular during the summer months, but the real treat is to visit Lake Claiborne in the fall when you get to witness those beautiful, bold colors against the lake.
3. Jimmie Davis State Park
Just driving into Jimmie Davis State Park during peak fall foliage is enough to take your breath away, and that’s before you tackle the trails or check out Caney Lake.
4. Lake D’Arbonne State Park
Tucked away in the tiny town of Farmerville, this 655-acre park never disappoints during the fall. There are roughly six miles of hiking and biking trails that meander through the park, a great spot to visit when you need a quiet place to let your mind wander.
5. Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Park
Even though the Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Park isn't one of Louisiana's 21 state parks, it deserves a spot on the list. Located in Shreveport, this 160-acre park is drop-dead gorgeous in the fall. There's even a live animal exhibit and a deer pin, so bring the whole family along and introduce the next generation of nature lovers to the wonders of fall in Louisiana.
Planning on doing any Louisiana leaf peeping this year? These scenic drives in Louisiana are perfect for seeing those autumn colors!
