This Guided Hike Is the Best Way to Experience a Full Moon in Kentucky

Uncover the magic of the moonlit woods at Bernheim Forest and Arboretum.

Full moons have always fascinated me. Not only are they visually stunning, but each month's full moon event is unique. Did you know, for example, that the August full moon is traditionally considered the Blue Grain moon, and that September's is the Corn moon? If this fascinates you, I encourage you to sign up for a guided Full Moon Hike at Bernheim Forest and Arboretum.

By day, Bernheim Forest and Arboretum is a 16,000-acre property teeming with wildlife, gardens, hiking trails, and perhaps most famously, the "Forest Giants" installation by artist Thomas Dambo. Just 30 minutes south of Louisville, Berheim is fairly easy to get to, and it offers something for all ages. Some of the many highlights include the Edible Garden, a 17-acre natural playground, nearly 40 miles of meandering trails, and Isaac's Cafe.

The property was founded in 1929 by Isaac W. Bernheim, who had a vision of connecting nature and people. Nearly 100 years later, the arboretum has done just that; it's a breathtaking natural space that educates, inspires, and protects. The arboretum is open daily from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., but once a month, the garden stays open a little later for those who have signed up for a guided full-moon hike.

The adventure starts at the Garden Pavilion, where you'll meet at the scheduled time. There's a Full Moon Hike every month, and the timing is a bit different for each month. You'll want to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy hiking shoes. The full moon will light up the sky, and there will be lighting, so there's no need to bring a flashlight unless you'd like to use one. The registration fee is $15.

Once there, you'll meet your guides: volunteer naturalists who will lead you on a guided tour through the moonlit woods. You'll be amazed by the sheer beauty of the forest, not to mention the activity of the little critters who live among the trees. Along the way, the naturalists will shed light on the meaning behind that particular month's full moon.

In addition to Full Moon Hikes, Bernheim offers several interactive and guided experiences, such as Symphony of the Woods, a Mid-Week Stroll, Birding for Beginners, and Bats of Bernheim. If you need a place to stay, this historic 1905 Louisville farmhouse that can sleep eight guests is one of the most-loved Airbnbs in the area. If you have an eye for design, prepare to be absolutely charmed!
