One of Kentucky’s Quirkiest Towns Is Still Flying Under the Radar
Step inside Corbin, a quirky town in Kentucky that combines beautiful nature with a great dining scene and a museum out of your fast-food dreams.
Southeastern Kentucky is one of the most peaceful areas of the Bluegrass State, with small towns surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful nature and lush forest. However, there's one quirky town in Kentucky that isn't just worth a visit — it's become a destination worth seeking out for fans of nature and...fast food? Corbin isn't your ordinary small town, and this small city of about 7,900 is slowly gaining momentum as one of Kentucky's most intriguing tourist destinations.
So what makes Corbin so special? It's all about the history. From the rich and historic main street, packed with great restaurants to visit and independent shops to browse, to the stunning state park nearby, complete with one of the best waterfalls in Kentucky, it's a great place to spend a day exploring. However, most visitors to the state are going to make a beeline to one building — a unique fusion of one of America's most iconic fast-food restaurants and a museum that celebrates a legacy synonymous with Kentucky pride.
Where Is Corbin and Why Is It So Unique?

It'll probably be a long drive before you get to Corbin, Kentucky, because the town is surrounded by some of the largest forested areas in the state. In my opinion, that's part of the appeal. Make sure to look around for historic bridges and beautiful rivers as you approach your destination.
Corbin is in one of the most peaceful areas of Kentucky, located near Daniel Boone National Forest and around 90 minutes south of Lexington, Kentucky's second-largest city. That's allowed Corbin to develop its own culture, with many of the buildings along its main streets approaching a century old — like this Baptist Church, first constructed in 1913. Even many of the town's businesses skew old-school. You can dine in an old-school saloon or play over fifty pinball machines at the town's arcade.
The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town
However, there is one attraction that put this town on the map. This is the Harland Sanders Cafe & Museum, a historic restaurant operated by Harland "Colonel" Sanders himself from 1940 to 1956, long before KFC was a nationally-known brand. It still operates today as a restaurant, on the site where Sanders developed his famous secret recipe, but that's just the start of the attraction here.
The building also contains a full museum, featuring a walk through KFC history and displays of many of the items that were used at the restaurant from its earliest days. For those who have been eating at the restaurant for decades, it's a trip down memory lane. For others, you might be surprised at how much history there is here — but it'll definitely work up an appetite.
Which is a good thing, because the restaurant serves all the delicious KFC recipes you've come to expect. Today, it's operated by the KFC Foundation, which preserves the historic restaurant to pay tribute to its founder. The menu may be the one you've come to know, but reviews say everything tastes just a little better here.
What It's Like to Visit

Corbin's tourism is driven by the museum, but it's also right by the beautiful Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, one of the best state parks in Kentucky. Visiting Corbin is typically a laid-back experience, where the locals are friendly, and you'll want to take your time and enjoy the scenery. The remote location is a big part of why this town still flies under the radar, but there's something to be said for that. This place just wouldn't be the same if it were more famous already!
