Kentucky’s Dark Winter Skies Explode With Beauty in This National Forest
Stay up late for some excellent stargazing in Kentucky within the Daniel Boone National Forest and sleep at one of the coolest places to stay in the wild.
I have been increasingly interested in hiking in the dark. Sure, I have been in the forest at night, but rarely on purpose. There is something alluring about the adventure found in the shadows of night and then of course there is the wonder found in the heavens. Stargazing in Kentucky can give way to incredible celestial shows, but there is one spot in particular that has my attention: Daniel Boone National Forest. This is one of the best places to look at the stars in the Blue Grass State so get ready to pack a good headlamp for this adventure.
Daniel Boone National Forest is a sprawling and vast wilderness landscape just waiting to be explored. The area is filled with some of Kentucky’s best waterfalls and some rather unique geological features such as natural bridges. The arches in the park are fascinating to find and well worth the visit alone, but something happens in the woods as the sun goes down. The nighttime brings about a hushed quiet and then the stars illuminate the night sky.
Daniel Boone National Forest is a recognized dark sky park that is only rewarded to places with low light pollution and phenomenal night skies. So if you like to look into the heavens this is one of the best places in the state to go. Its remote location gives way to peaceful solitude and starry nights unlike any you have likely seen before.
Witnessing the Milky Way swirling in space, or a blanket of stars behind the shadowed covering of a rock archway is simply breathtaking. There is nothing that quite compares to this splendid show and makes it all the better in the heart of this incredible national forest.
As the night progresses you may start to get a little sleepy, so when it comes time to retire for the night, luckily there is an awesome unique stay nearby. You may have stayed in a tree house before but what about a cliffside house? This memorable rental is built quite literally on the side of a cliff high about the ground.
The Sky Dancer offers a one-of-a-kind stay that makes good use of the outside space. So you don’t have to stop the stargazing extravaganza. You can bundle up and lay back on the net and look up at the starry night for as long as time allows you.
The best part of this rental is that it is located in the heart of the forest so you will still be able to experience the dark night skies. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show before you spend the remainder of the night in this fabulous cliffside treehouse.
Have you ever been stargazing in Kentucky? There is nothing quite like exploring the night sky in the Daniel Boone National Forest. To take advantage of this incredible location make sure to book a night stay at The Sky Dancer for the best stargazing experience.
For another rare nighttime activity head to Cumberland Falls to see the unique moon bow!
