There are some states that are limited to one or two seasons, but fortunately, Kentucky is not one of them. We are blessed with four very different seasons. A few weeks ago we were still enjoying the sunshine of summer, but now fall is arriving in a flurry of change.
Here are 10 signs that autumn has arrived:
10. Chilly Nights and Frosts
The days are still warm but the nights are beginning to chill. Some people, including myself, have even turned their heat on already.
9. Corn Maze Attractions
Farmers all across the state have harvested their crops, but some leave their corn stalks standing. During the holiday seasons these "Children of the Corn" like fields are turned into scary haunted attractions for friends and families.
8. Fall Festivals
September, October, and November have a consistent barrage of festivals including pumpkins, music, barbecues, and hayrides.
7. Pumpkin Patch Attractions and Carving Classes
You can pick up a pumpkin at a local patch, and sometimes even get some carving tips.
6. Unwanted House Guests
Depending on where you live, you might find you have an unexpected roommate. This is the season when the field mice and other rodents start looking for alternative shelters for the upcoming winter. Squirrels may be tossing nuts down for you to crush, but others are scoping out your crawlspace.
5. Halloween and Fall Decor
Local stores have started putting out Halloween décor in all varieties. Giant ceramic pumpkins, fiery colored artificial wreaths, and skeletons have their own personal section in most large department stores.
4. Pumpkin Flavor or Shaped Foods
The local grocery stores suddenly experience a pumpkin takeover. Pumpkin creamer, cupcakes, pies, cookies, cakes, and plenty of sweets shaped or decorated like a pumpkin.
3. Pumpkin Flavored Beer Appears
Many of the prime brands like Samuel Adams, Shocktop, and Bluegrass Brewing Company (BBC) all have a pumpkin beer of some type.
2. Haunted Houses Open
Halloween may be over a month away, but as soon as the air becomes crisp, many of the larger haunted house attractions open up for business.
1. Fall Colors
The green of the forest is starting to take on shades of brown, gold, and reds.
Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons in Kentucky, but it can be challenging as well. This is the time of year for late harvests, changing temperatures, and plentiful pumpkins. Not to mention the scent of fresh apple pie wafting through the air. What are your favorite clues that fall is here, or favored fall things in general?
