This Little-Known Waterfront Town Is One of the Most Charming in Kentucky

Sitting just across Cincinnati on the banks of the Ohio River is a peaceful waterfront town in Kentucky that is quietly becoming one of the area’s coolest alternative destinations. For a long time, Dayton’s been overshadowed by its bigger and louder neighbors, Covington and Newport. But while both are definitely worth visiting, Dayton is a great option for travelers who want to be where the people aren't.

Why This Little-Known Waterfront Town in Kentucky Is So Charming

Dayton’s most irresistible feature is definitely its stretch of the Ohio River. From the banks of this body of water, you can get stunning views of the Queen City, which is just 30 minutes away by car. Visitors can easily plan a half-day trip to Dayton without missing out on Cincinnati's best landmarks. Its charm is also tied to the fact that it's one of the most underrated hidden waterfront destinations in Kentucky. You won’t find tourist traps and overpriced attractions. Instead, you’ll get to walk streets dotted with historic homes, boutique shops, and locally-owned restaurants.

What To See and Do in Dayton

The best thing to do in Dayton is to take a stroll along the Riverwalk. If you’re up for a long walk, start from Downtown Cincinnati and cross the Roebling Bridge into Northern Kentucky, then head east. Though the entire walk will take around an hour and a half, it provides beautiful river views at all times. For an adventure on the water, book a Cincinnati Historic Sightseeing Cruise to see interesting landmarks on both the Ohio and the Kentucky side of the river. Other fun activities include visiting the tiny Dayton Heritage Museum and enjoying nature at Jamestown Park. Architecture lovers should most definitely check out the Renaissance Revival-style St. Bernard Catholic Church and the Gothic Revival-style St. John's Episcopal Church, whose eye-catching stone facade is unique in this area.

Besides history and waterfront views, Dayton offers an exciting up-and-coming culinary scene. Start your visit at Unataza, a locally-owned Honduran coffee shop that serves pan-Latin bites and premium coffee. I highly recommend the coffee flight that lets you taste different menu items while fueling you up for the day. For food, head straight to Wayfarer Tavern, famous for its friendly atmosphere and unusual pizzas. Adventurous eaters should order the Pickle Power, whose creative toppings include ridge potato chips and, of course, pickles. Other great restaurant options include the Southern-inspired Galactic Fried Chicken, and Tuba Baking Co., a delicious German bakery. Finish your food tour by hopping to neighboring Covington to hit up bars and distilleries on the B-Line Bourbon Trail. 

Best Time to Visit Dayton

To experience Dayton (and the greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky area) at its best, plan a spring or fall trip. I visited in late September last year, and the weather was absolutely perfect. It was warm enough to wear dresses with a light sweater, yet cool enough for comfortable riverside walks. The third weekend of September also hosts Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, the largest manifestation of this celebration outside of Germany. You can easily escape to Dayton if you need a break from the festival crowds. Spring’s a pleasant season as well, with blooming flowers, good weather, and many sports events—just be prepared for a bit of rain! 

But, really, no matter the time of the year, you’ll find that Dayton is one of the best waterfront small towns in Kentucky for a relaxed day trip.
