This Scenic Kentucky Trail Is Even Better in the Winter

Explore the lesser-known side of the Red River Gorge this winter.

Hiking in the winter is an underrated adventure. Here in Kentucky, as the leaves lose their foliage, the mountain views only become lovelier, in my opinion. Sure, you'll need to bundle up in extra layers and wear some sturdy hiking boots, but it's almost always worth it. A winter's day brings with it a certain element of adventure, and the trail I've picked out is perfect for a cold-weather trek.

Tarr Ridge Trail is tucked away within the Daniel Boone National Forest in a renowned area of Kentucky known as the Red River Gorge Geological Area. Compared to some of the other areas of the Red River Gorge, such as Chimney Top, Auxier Ridge, or Sky Bridge, Tarr Ridge is decidedly less crowded—and that's especially true in the wintertime.

The trail measures 3.6 miles out-and-back. Along the way, you'll get to explore hardwood forests and the unique geology of the Red River Gorge, which formed approximately 300 million years ago. Tarr Ridge is situated along one of the sandstone fins carved out over millennia by ancient rivers. In the winter, hikers will be able to enjoy long-range views into the hollows. You'll also have a sharper view of the unique cliffs, chimneys, and buttresses the gorge is famous for.

The trail is mostly unmarked, but it's relatively easy to follow. It's also vital to stay near the forged pathway as much as possible, as sections of the trail can be narrow (especially the spur trails leading to various overlooks).

Hikers who have visited the trail recently report a lot of downed trees, which you'll need to navigate as you go. There are also a few steep scrambles, and it's important to be aware of where the trail becomes narrow. The trail opens up near the ridge, providing those panoramic views. There are a few gorge overlooks, so you don't need to hike the entire trail to enjoy them. In fact, there are five total, the last of which can be reached via a class-four scramble with a rope (not recommended unless you have lots of prior experience!)

Looking out over the wintery landscape, it's impossible not to feel grateful for Kentucky's natural beauty.
