This Roadside Spot in Kansas Is a Local Favorite—Here’s Why

You'll be mesmerized by the stunning architectural masterpiece in Kansas. This manmade marvel is a sight to behold!

Kansas might be an underrated state but don’t be misguided. There are so many hidden gems here to love. Our favorites include Monument Rocks, Elk Falls, and Dorothy's House and The Land of Oz. Locals and visitors alike can’t get enough of these beloved attractions, and we don’t blame them. What I like the most is that it takes little effort to explore these destinations. Lake Lenexa Dam is another easy-access hidden gem in Kansas that we are obsessed with. Not only is this a dam and spillway, but it’s also a true work of art - it’s an architectural masterpiece! You don’t want to miss seeing this iconic roadside spot in Kansas for yourself.

You'll find the Lake Lenexa Dam in Black Hoof Park just 15 miles south of Kansas City. This 230-acre park is a serene escape offering paved wheel-chair accessible hiking trails, playgrounds, boating, kayaking, and a disc golf course. The park is a great destination for a day trip with lots of amenities the entire family can enjoy.

The crown jewel of the park is the elaborately designed dam that stands out among its natural surroundings. The structure is the perfect combination of impeccable engineering and artistry.

Constructed in 2006, the spillway’s main purpose is to regulate the water flow of Lake Lenexa inside the park. The beautiful masterpiece was also created to highlight the connection between humans and nature. With that in mind, the architects designed the dam with fountains and sculptures to represent the flow of water.

The gorgeous dam is easy to access inside the park. It’s a short 5-minute stroll from the parking lot along the 2-mile-long Lake Lenexa Trail. Once you get to the incredible structure, you’ll be blown away by its immense beauty. Between the flowing streams of water, the serene lake, and the lush greenery, the picturesque scene is unlike any other. I love that you can view the dam from different angles as you stroll along the walking path. Be sure to have your camera ready to snap pics of this manmade wonder.

Benches around the dam provide a place to sit and enjoy the soothing sounds of water as you watch the local waterfowl play on the lake. Birdwatchers, keep your eyes peeled for hawks, eastern bluebirds, barred owls, and wood ducks that call the lake home.

While you could easily sit for hours to marvel at the stunning scenery, I suggest that you explore the rest of the park. The trails meander through dense forests with footbridges and boardwalks along the way. You can also rent a kayak to float on the gorgeous lake. Stay until sunset and be mesmerized as the sky is painted with breathtaking hues.

After your visit, you will fall in love with this amazing park and its centerpiece. And, of course, while you’re there, get to know the vibrant city of Lenexa and all that it has to offer. Ronnie's Restaurant is one of our favorite spots in town for a home-cooked meal. Order the Cinnamon Roll French Toast Platter, and you can thank us later!
