Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Kansas That’s Perfect for Summer

Take a scenic 1.3-mile hike in Shawnee, Kansas with your dog and cool off at a lakeside swim spot for a perfect summer adventure.

Let me paint you a picture: It’s an early Kansas morning. It’s summertime, and the weather isn’t too hot yet. You and your dog friend (let’s call them Bark Twain) are ready for a day of adventure. You go through the usual suspects: Randolph State Park? Probably swarming with kids on scooters and someone flying a drone dangerously close to your face. Clinton Lake? Gorgeous, but the drive feels like prepping for a full-blown expedition. Not ideal when you're trying to be back in time for tacos.

So how does this sound: a scenic, low-effort 1.3-mile hike followed by a lakeside swim... with your dog. Off-leash. In a park that feels like it was designed by someone who really understands what summer should be. Let me introduce you to Shawnee Mission Park.

You’ll find it in Shawnee, Kansas — just a short drive from Kansas City, but with a vibe all its own. It’s a city that blends natural beauty with hidden-gem charm. There are historic walking paths, local breweries, and, yes, you can even eat in a literal castle. Wandering Vine at Caenen Castle offers incredible food and a wine list that means business. Whether you're in hiking boots or dinner shoes, Shawnee covers all the bases.

Now, onto the crown jewel. Shawnee Mission Park is no backyard patch of grass, y'all. It’s 1,655 acres of peak Kansas summer. At its center is a 120-acre lake where you can paddleboard, sail, fish, or just cannonball in with joyful abandon. The lake’s stocked with everything from bass to trout, and yes, permits are required, but that’s just part of the price of looking this cool in neoprene. There’s even a solar-powered boat cleaning station with a Wi-Fi hub and tools to protect the lake from invasive species. When it comes to nature, Kansas doesn’t mess around.

What you’re really here for, though, is that hike-to-swim combo. West of the 87th and Ridgeview entrance, you’ll find a 44-acre off-leash dog area that’s basically a puppy paradise. There’s a paved trail leading down to the lake and a dedicated beach just for dogs, plus wood chip and natural trails for exploring grasslands and shaded woods. Your dog gets the zoomies, you get a peaceful nature walk, and everybody ends up wet and happy.

Still have energy? The park offers two disc golf courses (including the new Art Nine), mountain biking trails, a marina, picnic shelters, fishing spots, a playground, and even an outdoor amphitheater. John Barkley Plaza, near the eastern entrance, serves as a perfect launchpad for your park adventures... whether you're there to hike, fish, or pretend you're starring in your own indie nature documentary.

Need gear? Or a map? Or a permit for remote-controlled boat shenanigans? The JCPRD Administration Building has you covered with everything from park maps to orienteering course packets. There’s also a pump track for bikers and equestrian trails for the horse-inclined. (No, dogs cannot ride horses. We checked.)

The off-leash area is open year-round during regular park hours, except for maintenance closures every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. That’s when the park gets a little spa time to stay in top shape. If one hike isn’t enough, Shawnee Mission Park has a whole trail system to explore. Try the Gary L. Haller Trail. It’s 2.1 miles long, paved, and fully wheelchair accessible. Everyone gets to have fun in Kansas, y’all.

So leash up, pack some snacks, maybe a dry towel (or three), and head to Shawnee Mission Park. Whether you’re there for the hike, the swim, or the chance to toast your adventure with a glass of wine in a castle, this little slice of Kansas summer is waiting.
