The Magnificent Natural Wonder in Iowa That’s Located Only Feet From the Parking Lot

Lake Cornelia may be the most beautiful glacial lake in Iowa. The park is home to an easy-to-access park and campground in rural Iowa.

Iowa has some amazing lakes, rivers, and beaches that are perfect for summer fun. What many folks don't know about the Hawkeye State's lakes, though, is that most of them were built by good ol' human ingenuity. Yes, as much as we love our lakes, a majority of them are reservoirs and other man-made marvels. There is something about a natural lake, however, that hits differently, and of these natural beauties is hiding in rural Iowa not far from the small town of Clarion. Welcome to Lake Cornelia, a stunning glacial lake in Iowa that might be one of the most pristine and peaceful lakes around. And how do you get there, you ask? Well, you just drive right up to the nearby park and campground, and walk right up to the spectacular waterfront. It might just be the perfect summer retreat—especially if it's a little too hot for a long hike and you just want to bask in that perfect waterfront breeze—or spot for a quick hit of nature when winter weather rolls around in Iowa.

Lake Cornelia County Park is one of those out-of-the-way destinations that has remained a true hidden gem, even in the summer. This stunning glacial lake is one of the few of its kind in the area, and it's a clean and beautiful lake perfect for a visit any time of the year and in any season. It's also an excellent fishing spot that is stocked with walleye, bass, perch, crappie, and catfish.

The best part is that, although it might be a drive to get here, you'll be able to walk right from the parking lot to your destination. Moreover, a visit to Lake Cornelia need not be limited to a day trip. You can stay right in the park at its well-appointed campground. The park boasts 88 total campsites, plenty with sewer, water, and electric hookups. The campground facilities are open seasonally from April 15 to October 15, but limited lakeshore sites are available year round.

The park is small, but it does have on-site bathrooms, as well as an event pavilion for gatherings. Really, though, what do you need besides stunning views of the lake, a fishing rod in your hand, and that lakeside breeze in your face? It's a perfect spot for a getaway to nature that you can reach in just a few steps.

You can find out more about the camping experience and amenities on the Lake Cornelia Park website. If camping isn't quite your style, however, we also found an incredible lakeside Vrbo on the shore of Lake Cornelia. It's a perfect laid-back family getaway, and you can book your own stay on the official VRBO listing.

Have you ever visited the hidden gem that is Lake Cornelia Park and Campground? We'd love to hear about your favorite places in Iowa where you can take just a few steps from the parking lot and be in nature.
