There's nothing like exploring Iowa's state parks. Of course, everyone else has the same idea! I don't mind big crowds in places like the Iowa Great Lakes, but sometimes you really want to get away from it all. For those who want to explore the great outdoors and indulge in some down-home activities, there's a rustic park in Iowa that's perfect for channeling your inner Ron Swanson. Welcome to Matsell Bridge Natural Area, in rural Linn County, around 30 miles from Cedar Rapids. It's an ideal spot for camping, hiking, sightseeing, hunting, and exploring the trails in one of Iowa's best spots for equestrian recreation. Calling all horse lovers - it's time to get away from it all!
Matsell Bridge Natural Area is perfectly tucked away in the woods, with little else nearby.
This laid-back park is filled with quiet spots for camping and relaxation, as well as peaceful and easy-to-navigate trails.
You can take in the sights on foot, especially near the water and the famous bridge...
Or venture deeper into the woods on the popular equestrian trails, which are best navigated on horseback.
Along the way, you'll come across quite a few historic buildings and ruins.
The rustic feel extends to the cabin, which comes equipped with a wood-burning stove and is one of the most unique places to stay in Iowa.
Beyond those looking to hike and explore, this is one of the most popular hunting spots in this area of Iowa. Check the county park website for current regulations.
While summer is the most popular time to visit, we recommend a stop back here in winter, when the park is almost supernaturally peaceful.

You can find out more about the area's amenities on the My County Parks website. It may be quite the drive to get here, so make sure you're stocked up on all the essential road trip snacks before you set out! After working up an appetite at the park, you're only about 12 miles away from the small town of Central City, where you'll find Parlor on Main, an old-school diner and ice cream shop that we absolutely love.
