The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Indiana

When it comes to things considered romantic, what are some of the first items to come to mind? Candlelit dinners, roses, bubble baths... sure, but what if you're craving something different this Valentine's Day? What if you're not really into the sappy stuff? Let's say you're like me, and you want to do something more hands-on and immersive - like a good, solid hike. Well, I found an awesome romantic hiking trail in Indiana, complete with incredible views and opportunities for getting a little closer.

Enter the Mount Jackson, Mount Holden, and Mount Tom Loop. Sure, it's a mouthful, but if done at this time of year, it will also fill hearts. Bring your special someone on this moderately challenging hike and enjoy the incredible views together! It's especially wonderful in the winter, with photogenic scenes everywhere you turn.

Before we get into it, I definitely need to specify that you don't want to go to Indiana Dunes National Park - this trail is located at Indiana Dunes State Park, which is in the same area but just north of the national park. Be mindful of where you are - while both parks are awesome, you'll only find this awesome hike here.

You'll begin your adventure at the Indiana Dunes Nature Center. The trailhead is in the parking lot, so keep your eyes peeled for the signage. Once you find it, it's remarkably well-marked and well-kept, and once you get here, you'll see why I feel like it's ultra-romantic.

Perhaps predictably, the trail leads hikers to amazing views of three incredible sand dunes: Mount Jackson, Mount Holden, and Mount Tom. You'll be able to climb to the tops of each and take in the splendid views. Rest your head on your love's shoulder while taking in the scenery together. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

Dress warmly - it is still winter, after all - and wear sturdy shoes. The trail consists of both boardwalks and soft sand (though, it's often mostly-frozen this time of year); it can be exhausting for those not used to hiking often, so pack water and plan accordingly. Go just a bit off-trail and explore the town of Beverly Shores; it's Indiana's most delightful beach town (yes, beach town), and it can be romantic, too. On clear days, you can see the Chicago skyline across Lake Michigan from the tops of the dunes. The views are incredible, and if you play your cards right, each is perfect for a proposal location. Imagine asking the love of your life to marry you with Lake Michigan in the background - amazing! Alternatively, pop the question on the snow-covered beach. They'll never forget that moment.
