Winter Is Magical in This Indiana Town – Here’s Why You Should Go
This small town in Indiana located on Lake Michigan is wonderful all the time, but in the winter, it seems to truly come into its own.
Michigan City, Indiana, is a small town on the shore of Lake Michigan that I've covered in the past; in the summer, this town comes alive and is a delight to experience. But did you know that when the lake is partially frozen and the air is frigid, this town truly comes into its own? It's true - especially for those who love the brilliantly contrasty appearance of winter. The town's population is just over 31,650, and despite the "beachy" nature of the place, winter is its prime season; let me show you why.
First and foremost, one doesn't discuss Michigan City without mentioning the incredible wonder of the Michigan City Pier and Lighthouse. As Indiana's longest pier, this amazing landmark looks especially wonderful when covered in layers of snow or, depending on the weather, even solid ice. It's almost like something out of a movie, but no - it's home sweet home. I can't recommend the lighthouse walk enough!
If you're a lover of all things shopping, I have great news: shopping in Michigan City is better in the winter than in the summer. Why? The crowds are virtually absent, allowing you to browse more easily and enjoy some peace and quiet instead of the crazy, bustling summer atmosphere you'd experience otherwise.
If you get hungry, Michigan City has many wonderful restaurants and eateries, like Matey's Restaurant. This nautically-themed restaurant is a blast for adults and children alike - the kids will love it, and so will you. Come indoors and get warm in the winter; check out the dinner menu and enjoy American bar classics like wings, flatbreads, mozzarella sticks, and more. There's something for everyone here.
Once your belly is nice and content, you can take a short stroll to the marina, the beach, and even a casino (though the kids will have to be elsewhere for that one). Do some more shopping and take in all the sights of a frozen Lake Michigan; it's such a strange and beautiful time of year, and I feel like adding a few layers of ice to everything brings out the magic of it all. Ice skating is popular in town; you'll find several rinks in Michigan City and other nearby communities.
While exploring the town, you might decide you don't want to leave yet - no judgment here! In that case, you'll want to check out some of the awesomely unique places to stay in the area; my favorite stay can be found on Booking.com: an apartment within a jaw-droppingly beautiful Victorian home.
