Beat the Winter Blues by Exploring Lake Michigan, the Perfect Snowy Escape
Sure, Lake Michigan is well-known for its summertime shenanigans... but in the winter, it becomes a whole new thing to experience.
Lake Michigan is probably one of, if not the most beloved, natural wonders in Indiana. It's gigantic, being the second-largest of the Great Lakes. In the summer, it's one of the Midwest's most popular destinations. But I'm not here to talk about Lake Michigan in the summer. Hear me out: winter is the best time to visit Indiana's most incredible lake. Why should you visit Lake Michigan in the winter? Let me count the ways.
Indiana is home to 45 miles of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline; numerous towns and cities are nestled right up on the water, like Gary, Michigan City, and the luxurious Beverly Shores. The things to do on and around the lake are nearly endless, even in the chilly season - and I can't recommend a wintertime escape to this incredible place (and all its amazing towns) highly enough. Michigan City is home to the gorgeous Michigan City Lighthouse and pier, which are incredibly photogenic.
One of my favorite aspects of exploring Lake Michigan in Indiana during the winter is the distinct and notable lack of crowds. Everyone loves to come out to the lake during the warmest times of the year, but during the coldest, it's almost as if folks forget it's there at all. I adore strolling along the lakeshore, all by myself, taking in the sights and sounds of winter in Indiana.
If it's our national parks you crave (I don't blame you; I'm the same way), Indiana Dunes National Park is right up on Lake Michigan, and it's jaw-dropping. There's something purely magical about the sand dunes covered in fresh, undisturbed snow. The lake ices over, sometimes all in one big sheet, others in strange-looking chunks and rings. Following a winter storm, it's common for every surface - the dunes, the water, the trees - to be coated in a layer of crystalline ice. For those who love winter, it is paradise.
Boating and swimming aren't popular this time of year for obvious reasons, but ice fishing is. It's not that there's nothing to do in Indiana in the winter - it's that all the possibilities shift slightly to accommodate the harshness of our chilly season. That's worth noting, too: Lake Michigan is stunning in the winter, but you absolutely need to dress warmly. Temperatures can and regularly plunge well below freezing, and at these temperatures, hypothermia quickly sets in.
So, this winter, while everyone's daydreaming about summer's return, I think we'll set ourselves apart, dear reader, by enjoying every last moment of it. Every degree below freezing, every snowstorm, every snowflake - the wonderful possibilities of winter are only as limited as your imagination. I think you'll find yourself hopelessly hooked on Lake Michigan winters from the moment you first give it a shot.
