Winter in Indiana is a special time - at least I think so. Sure, the Midwest has this crazy reputation for having over-the-top brutal winters, but that's... not entirely true. As it turns out, yes, it's cold - and there's usually plenty of snow - but this is just PART of what makes Indiana winters what they are. What are they, exactly? Easy - fun, beautiful, and TOTALLY worth enjoying. Take, for instance, Indiana Dunes National Park - a place I love reading and writing about. It's easily one of the most jaw-droppingly incredible places in the entire Midwest... and in the winter, it transforms entirely.
Indiana Dunes National Park is an absolutely amazing National Park - the only one Indiana's got - nestled right up alongside beautiful Lake Michigan.
During the warmer months, it's already pretty otherworldly, looking nothing at all like the rest of Indiana's landscape.
...but in the winter, the Dunes takes "otherworldly" to a whole new level.
And, what's even better, it's open even during this chilly time, and it's PERFECT for outdoorsy folks to come out and enjoy.
The trails are still open, and when they're coated in a layer or two of snow, it's time to bust out the skis and/or snowshoes.
Cross-country skiing is a popular winter pastime out here at Indiana Dunes, and it comes as no surprise - the park seems like it was literally designed for such things. From wide, open spaces and gentle hills to dramatic valleys in between towering dunes, you'll find the perfect canvas on which to do your art.
...the fine art of cross-country skiing, that is.
I do have a few favorite trails for winter shenanigans at Indiana Dunes. One such trail is the lesser-known Ly-ko-ki-we Trail, which is just over six miles long and is practically made for this kind of stuff. Love it.
Another must is the trail(s) at Glenwood Dunes.
This is the trail the park itself recommends, especially for those who are new to cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
For those who are seasoned and enjoy a challenge, there's always the Tolleston Dunes Trail.
No matter which one you go for and why, you're sure to find a new favorite winter wonderland within Indiana Dunes National Park.
