The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Illinois

Illinois is one of those states that doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's the shining crown jewel of the Midwest, located right on the Great Lakes and filled top-to-bottom with incredible things to do, see, and experience.

Illinois is a hiker's dream come true. If you're anything like me, hiking is your private paradise; you go where the trails lead you, and sometimes, the trails can even lead to romance. Hear me out:

I know it's a little unconventional - but hiking can definitely be romantic, and I've found the perfect hiking trail in Illinois to enjoy with your special someone this Valentine's Day. It's incredible in its beauty and a true wonderland around this time of year.

Enter Effigy Tumuli Trail, an easy hike just under two miles long with some of the greatest views in Illinois. It's an incredibly romantic trail if you're into that sort of thing - the views are magnificent, and experiencing them together is incredible. Lay your head on your beloved's shoulder and take in the views; if you're feeling especially bold, the hike is perfect for a picturesque proposal.

The trail is mostly flat and easy to traverse; be sure to wear good, sturdy, warm shoes and dress warmly as well. Winter in Illinois can be nothing short of brutal at times, and staying warm is incredibly important. I personally get my hiking gear (including clothing) from REI, and it works wonders.

There are many sights to see - other than the to-die-for views. You might spot the bison herd that calls this area home if you're lucky. You'll see them toward the beginning of the adventure, and it sets a definitively fun, exotic-feeling tone for the rest of the trek.

Interestingly, this hike is a shortened version of a longer one known as the River Bluff Trail at Buffalo Rock State Park. The views from both are splendid, and if you'd like to turn this 40-minute hike into a much longer one, the River Bluff Trail is perfect. Simply keep going!

Do keep in mind that you'll need sturdy footwear, and there is very little shade along this trail. Even when it's cold outside - like during Valentine's Day - hydration is incredibly important.
