At only 298 acres, Buffalo Rock State Park is only a fraction of the size of the state’s larger parks, but it’s home to one of the most incredible natural wonders in Illinois. So, lace up your hiking boots, and let’s hit the trail.

The land that comprises Buffalo Rock State Park was once an island in the Illinois River.

Today, however, it is a dramatic promontory on the north bank of the river, about four miles west of Ottawa.

Although it’s no longer an island, the land’s geologic history and striking limestone topography make it one of the most fascinating natural wonders in Illinois.

Visitors explore its rugged, rocky terrain and forested bluffs.

You’ll even find a gorgeous ribbon of a waterfall if you explore long enough.

The park is criss-crossed with hiking trails that afford visitors a full appreciation of the park and the power of the river.

Many trails lead to overlooks and viewing sites. These afford panoramic vistas out over the Illinois River and its wide valley.

Visitors will also enjoy the small herd of American bison that the DNR has brought into the park to offer some historical context and as a nod to the rich Native American heritage in the area.

In addition, an artist installed large-scale effigy tumuli - some hundreds of feet long - out of earth and stone. The tumuli depict animals and fish native to the region.
