You Have To Experience This Riverfront Hike in Illinois for Yourself

Sentry Bluff Trail combines natural beauty and adventure in the heart of southern Illinois.

Looking for a hike in Illinois that has a little bit of everything: adventure, sights, history, flora, and interesting natural formations? Look no further, as the Sentry Bluff Trail has exactly the variety that will wow any nature-loving adventurer.

The Sentry Bluff Trail is a 3.2-mile loop that takes approximately 1 hour to complete. Located within the Bell Smith Springs Natural Landmark of Pope County, which is a short drive from the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area in the Shawnee National Forest of southern Illinois, the trail is a beautifully scenic river walk that showcases the Bay Creek, a wide variety of wildflowers, and an impressive sandstone bridge.

Don’t let the picturesque setting fool you; this challenging hike isn't the walk in the park that I thought it was. Expect water crossings, cliffs, and some steep rocky slopes that all add a fun challenge to the experience. The effort is well worth it for the stunning views that appear at every turn.

Established in 1980 as a national natural landmark due to its diverse geological and ecological qualities, Bell Smith Springs Natural Landmark is a part of the Shawnee National Forest and hosts eight miles of trail filled with rock formations, sandstone cliffs, and scenic overlooks. The trail is also a treasure for birdwatchers and plant enthusiasts.

Birders from across the country come to visit for the chance to catch tanagers, sparrows, pileated woodpeckers, and eastern phoebes in their natural habitats. Bell Smith Springs also boasts more than 700 different species of flowering plants, ferns, and lichens.

Although the Sentry Bluff Trail is a well-maintained route, it is also known to be a hike that demands hikers’ attention and strong preparation, especially after rainy weather. Two river crossings require hikers to step carefully across slick stones that can become slippery. I recommend packing a pair of sturdy, waterproof shoes.

Several rocky slopes may also require a bit of scrambling, particularly when muddy. While these elements may be challenging, I found them to be highly rewarding and fun to take part in. People of all ages can enjoy this trail; just be sure to stay on the marked path, as poison ivy is common off-trail.

The real star of the trail is the impressive natural sandstone bridge, a 125-foot-long arch that spans over the canyon. It’s a perfect photo-op and a memorable spot to mark the journey. For those with energy to spare, a short climb to the top of the bridge offers a breathtaking view of the canyon from above.

Sentry Bluff also interconnects with three other trails in the area, each showcasing different features of the park. Formations like the Devil’s Backbone, various waterfalls, and the historic Old Grist Mill Dam can all be visited by ambitious hikers over a day or two. Plenty of picnic tables are scattered across the park, allowing hikers to rest and refuel. Just be sure to leave no trace when you're done.

If you’re looking for an exciting, scenic hike that won’t take the whole day but still feels like an adventure, the Sentry Bluff Trail is a fantastic choice that I wholly recommend. With rivers, canyons, a natural arch, and plenty of wildlife, this hike is sure to make any nature lover’s day.  Mark your calendars to visit Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area; you won’t want to miss it.
