Illinois is full of incredible nature. While some of our state parks are popular and well-known destinations, there is something special about having a little slice of paradise that's less traveled. For me, nothing is more calming than the sound of water, so when I started researching secret lakes in Illinois, I wanted to find a place where peace and quiet were among the main attributes. I landed on Sangchris Lake, a harmonious secret lake in Central Illinois — and let me show you why.
Sangchris Lake is located just outside Springfield in the town of Rochester. The lake is part of Sangchris Lake State Park, which spans over 3,000 acres of lush forest.
A unique feature of the lake is its jagged shape, made up of 120 miles of rugged shoreline.
Anglers flock to the hidden gem lake for peaceful fishing, with plenty of space and solitude for a relaxing afternoon.
Try your best to catch largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, carp, bullhead, and catfish as you sit under the open sky on tranquil waters. The lake was designated as a State Fish Preserve in 1972.
Of course, fish aren't the only wildlife who call the lake home. Herron, geese, and ducks are often spotted in or near the water, with the occasional deer popping in for a quick drink.
Boaters also love Sangchris Lake, noting the ease of its glassy waters. Rowboats, kayaks, canoes, sailboats, and motorboats are allowed, but must preserve the lake's calm nature.
Even for those just looking to admire a brilliant Illinois sunset, a trip to Sangchris Lake is worth it for its incredible sky views.
If you're ready to visit this secret lake in Central Illinois, start planning your trip by visiting the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website and the Sangchris Lake State Park Facebook page. While you're in the area, it's worth spending a day (or weekend) in the capital city of Springfield! Not only is it a beer lover's paradise, but it's got tons of fun things to do. This renovated historic rental home sleeps six and is a perfect home base for your Sangchris Lake and Springfield adventures.
