Explore Illinois’ Wildlife At This Underrated State Park

When the weather allows, Illinois is a wonderful state for hiking. There is an abundance of parks and trails that give nature lovers every opportunity to get outside and take a healthy, scenic walk. Morain Hills State Park in McHenry, Illinois, is one of many great options. What sets this park apart is the amount of wildlife you're likely to see regardless of when you plan your visit.

Located about three miles south of the city of McHenry in northeast Illinois, Moraine Hills State Park is on a 2,200-acre plot of land.

There are over 10 marked trails throughout the park that can be used by hikers, cyclists, and skiers in the winter. The trails vary in length and difficulty, depending on your available time and skillset.

Lake Defiance is located near the center of the park, taking up 48 acres. Fishing is permitted in the lake from marked areas along the shoreline.

Boating is also permitted in the lake. Private boats can be brought in by car, while rentals are also available the day of.

A wide variety of wildlife call the park home, including turtles, coyotes, white-tailed deer, and raccoons. Over 200 species of birds have been spotted in the park, including herons, ducks, and geese.

Archery and shotgun hunting are permitted in the park during their respective seasons. On approved hunting days, the park is closed to the rest of the public for obvious safety reasons.
