You can take hundreds of scenic paths in Idaho to nearly every soaring mountain peak and unexplored corner of the state, yet there's something particularly romantic about wooden trails and boardwalks meandering through our wildest untamed landscapes. Fortunately, Idaho has quite a few to choose from! Whether winding gently through rich forests or stretching over gentle creeks, no matter the setting, they always add a unique, rustic charm to any outdoor adventure. This season, head down to one of these boardwalks across the state for a peaceful, memorable stroll through the great outdoors.
1. Lolo Pass Visitor Center Boardwalk
Sitting on the border between Idaho and Montana, the Lolo Pass Visitor Center introduces travelers to the history of the Lolo trail, its role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and its importance today. A quaint boardwalk in a nearby meadow leads into the trees where that discovery begins firsthand.
2. Upper Mesa Falls Boardwalk
Leading down to one of Idaho's most spectacular waterfalls, this boardwalk and scenic overlook is absolutely beautiful. The boardwalk trail has accessible options and is just over 1/2 a mile, making it perfect for all skill levels and abilities... plus, it's dog-friendly!
3. Coeur d'Alene Marina Boardwalk
Definitely Idaho's most photographed and well-known boardwalk, this floating path near in the Coeur d'Alene Resort marina is actually the longest floating boardwalk in the world at 3,300 feet. Special features include an arched night-lit bridge, picnic and seating areas, and -- of course -- the view itself. It's a great place to catch a sunset or enjoy an afternoon stroll.
4. Blackwell Island Park Nature Trail, Coeur d'Alene
Meandering through the trees as well as overlooking the water, this quaint trail in Northern Idaho is popular for good reason, especially during the vibrant fall season. There are also plenty of benches for nature and wildlife viewing.
5. Hagerman Fossil Beds Boardwalk and Overlook, Hagerman
Located on a bluff beside the Snake River, this National Monument's unique desert boardwalk features expansive views and leads to a scenic overlook of the water.
6. Silver Creek Preserve Nature Trail, Bellevue
Flowing at the base of the Picabo Hills, Spring Creek is a unique dessert spring that surprisingly few Idahoans know about, but offers incredible fly fishing and up-close wildlife viewing. Meandering over wetlands and marshy meadows, this narrow boardwalk trail is the perfect place to capture that award-winning nature photo.
7. Giant Western Cedar Walk, Elk River
This boardwalk in small-town Idaho may lead to the country's oldest tree as its destination, but the walk through ages of old-growth cedars on the way is just as photo-worthy. For more information on this special tree, check out this article.
