The Polecat Reserve Features A Trail System In Idaho That’s Worthy Of A Day Hike

One thing I love about Treasure Valley is you can spend the day in the heart of the city, or within minutes, you can be on an incredible hiking trail. One destination just outside of Boise that is home to miles of trails is the Polecat Reserve. Developed in 2007, this area features a trail system for hikers and mountain bikers alike. It’s an excellent destination for a day trip.

Polecat Reserve is located north of downtown Boise. This outdoor space is home to more than seven miles of winding, single track trails that you can explore on foot or bike.

The trails you find here are perfect for the entire family, as well as mountain bike beginners. There are easy inclines and easy-to-follow paths, making it ideal for all skill levels.

The trails here include the Quick Draw Trail #83, Doe Ridge Trail #82, and Polecat Loop Trail #1. The Polecat Loop Trail is the longest of the three and has more challenging areas than the others.

The Polecat Loop Trail is 5.8 miles and quite narrow. However, the path can be fairly quiet and you may find yourself alone on the journey.

All trail users are required to travel in a specific direction on this Boise trail. In 2024, trail users must travel clockwise. Visit the Polecat Reserve website for the most up-to-date information on travel direction.

Along your way, you can expect to capture gorgeous views of Boise and the natural scenery surrounding the city.

However, no matter which trail you venture on in the Polecat Reserve, it is important that you bring plenty of water and come prepared. There is little shade and the trails can become quite dusty and hot in the summer months.

If you choose to hike the Polecat Loop Trail or others in the reserve, your dog is welcome to join but must be kept on a leash at all times. And don’t be surprised if you spot wildlife on your journey — they also love this area of Idaho.
