We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Most Delicious Hiking Trail Name in Idaho
You may not find chocolate along your way but you'll find views that are just as sweet.
It’s no secret that I am a chocoholic. It doesn’t matter if it’s milk, white, or dark chocolate, you can guarantee I’ll eat it. In fact, I have chocolate stashes hidden around my house so my children won’t devour my favorite sweet treats. That’s why I’m excited to tell you all about a hiking trail near Ketchum — the Chocolate Gulch Trail. Perfect for an afternoon outdoors, this Idaho hiking trail is not too difficult but it will certainly challenge you in spots. But just be aware … despite the delicious name, there’s no chocolate to be found along your route.
The Ketchum area is one of my favorite destinations in Idaho. It is beautiful here and the outdoor activities are endless. Tackling the Chocolate Gulch Trail is just one of the many things you can do in this corner of the state, and it’s going to be a breathtaking climb. The trail is located in the Sawtooth National Forest and is a 4.5-mile loop. It’s the perfect early morning or late afternoon adventure.
You’ll find the trailhead just north of Ketchum, near a small parking area by State Highway 75. This is a trail where you can enjoy a little bit of everything. You’ll walk near the Big Wood River and through meadows.
There are also forests you’ll hike through and hills that offer gorgeous mountain views. Sturdy hiking boots are a must for this trek as some areas of the trail are quite steep. In total, you will gain more than 800 feet in elevation. Plus, you'll find portions of this trail with rocks and roots sticking out of the ground, making your journey a little bumpy.
Summer is a beautiful time to explore as colorful wildflowers are easily seen along the trail. Fall is also a delightful time to tackle the Chocolate Gulch Trail as the vibrant foliage transforms the area. But regardless of when you tackle the Chocolate Gulch Trail, you may find quiet and solitude along your way. This typically isn’t a very busy trail, especially if you visit during the weekdays or get an early start in the morning. However, you never know who (or what) you may come across on your journey. It isn’t uncommon to spot some wildlife along your way.
Dogs are allowed on the Chocolate Gulch Trail, and you may want bug spray depending on the time of year you visit. I also recommend that you have all hiking essentials with you. Despite not being too long, it is always best to be prepared.
Yes, the Chocolate Gulch Trail may not be filled with delicious treats, but the views are certainly sweet. You’ll find something along your path to love.
