The Epic 6-Mile Trail Near Idaho’s Lake Pend Oreille Worth Every Incline

This trail may challenge you but the views make every step worth it.

Idaho is an underrated state. It is a destination filled with natural beauty, breathtaking features, and bucket-list-worthy parks, but it is often overlooked. While a part of me loves that Idaho doesn’t draw in the crowds like other states (even though it does draw in plenty of people!), I often wish that many individuals could experience the breathtaking views that the Gem State has to offer. One way to capture these gorgeous scenes is on the Mickinnick Trail near Ponderay. Along this hike, you’ll enjoy forest, meadow, city, and lake views that impress and inspire, but it does come at a cost. This trail is challenging—you will be tested physically and mentally. However, it will be worth every step and every incline.

The Mickinnick Trail is a popular hike near Ponderay in Idaho’s panhandle. It’s well-maintained and easy to follow. The trailhead is also easy to find and located right outside of town—there’s no long drive in the mountains for this adventure. However, the hike itself is not the easiest journey.

This trail is just over six miles and it’s steep. Plus, the terrain is not smooth. In total, you can expect to climb more than 2,100 feet in elevation. Some of the inclines are quite challenging and others are gradual, but your legs will certainly be screaming at you along your way. In fact, sturdy, high-quality hiking shoes are a must to help you tackle the inclines and maneuver over rocky portions of the trail and areas with tree roots sticking out of the ground. You’ll want to watch your feet closely to avoid stumbling.

But don’t look down the entire journey because you will miss some of Idaho's breathtaking pure beauty. You’ll trek through thick forests with trees towering over you on all sides. In the summer, the meadows are covered in wildflowers, and if you time your trek just right, you'll likely come across huckleberries that make for the perfect quick snack.

You’ll also capture incredible city views and some breathtaking scenes featuring Lake Pend Oreille. Many individuals begin this hike early in the morning to beat the heat of the day and to watch the sun rise slowly above the lake. It certainly is a beautiful way to start the day. Evenings are also ideal as sunset views are always magical.

You can bring your favorite furry friend along with you on this adventure, and always pack plenty of water—you will certainly want it. I also recommend packing bear spray, especially during the late summer months when huckleberries are at their peak. Bears love these berries as much as we do. And, if you love fall foliage, this is an excellent hike for your autumn bucket list as you’ll find yourself surrounded by vibrant colors on portions of the trail. Plus, autumn’s colors near the town and around the lake add even more beauty to this already gorgeous scene.

Mickinnick Trail isn’t going to be an easy journey but it’s going to be one that’s difficult to forget. It’s a hike that will make you wonder why Idaho doesn’t get the love it deserves. The climb is worth every step. Idaho is beautiful.

If you are looking for other challenging hikes in northern Idaho, consider the Scotchman Peak Trail or the Stevens Lake Trail. However, the Snow Falls Trail near Bonners Ferry is an excellent option if you want something short and easy for the entire family.
