The Iconic Trail in Idaho Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

The hike to Scotchman Peak in northern Idaho is not easy but it's a trek you will never forget.

Idaho is known for several bucket-list-worthy hiking trails like the trek to Mesa Falls, the journey around Craters of the Moon, and the afternoon adventure to relaxing hot springs. But tucked away in Idaho’s panhandle is one iconic trail that should be on every hiker’s bucket list—the Scotchman Peak Trail. Be prepared because this is not going to be an easy journey, but it will be unforgettable. There is nothing quite like it here in the Gem State.

Scotchman Peak is in Idaho’s Cabinet Mountains and is the highest point in Bonner County. This peak is approximately 7,000 feet in elevation and is where you’ll capture some of the most breathtaking views of Lake Pend Oreille, the Selkirk Mountains, and more.

But to capture the incredible views from the peak, you’ll have quite a challenging hike to tackle. The Scotchman Peak Trail is a 7.6-mile, out-and-back journey that is quite popular and a great calf workout. In total, you will climb more than 3,700 feet in elevation. Believe me, your legs will talk to you throughout this entire experience.

The trail begins approximately 6.5 miles east of Clark Fork, Idaho. I recommend using GPS to find the trailhead as there are a few turns on forest service roads you will need to make. And before you begin, take some time to ensure you have all the hiking supplies you need. This trail is the perfect definition of a day hike, so you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of water and snacks for a full-day journey. If venturing in early spring or in the fall, I’d also recommend some spikes or snowshoes as it isn’t uncommon to encounter heavy snow on your way.

Despite the challenge, the Scotchman Peak Trail is not a quiet adventure. This is a popular trail and you’ll likely encounter several other hikers on your way. Be respectful of others and take your time. This is the type of hike where slow and steady is going to benefit you.

Yes, this trail is long and yes, it is steep, but it is also spectacular. As you climb, you’ll hike through forested areas and to meadows with viewpoints where you can see for miles. There are overlooks where you can capture views of Lake Pend Oreille, the surrounding towns, and mountains. It’s stunning.

When you reach the top, take a seat and look out. Every step is well worth this view. And, you never know what other creatures are also enjoying the views. It isn’t uncommon to see mountain goats near the top of Scotchman Peak as well. These are majestic creatures to watch but keep your distance and give them the respect they deserve.

Scotchman Peak Trail is truly an iconic trail in Idaho. It’s a challenge, but it’s one worth working towards. Add it to your bucket list and work hard to experience this adventure—it’s one you don’t want to miss.
