The Most Remote Lake In Hawaii Is Also The Most Peaceful

There are tons of amazing places all throughout the Hawaiian islands, but this remote lake in Hawaii is an absolute wonder. Lake Waiau is at the summit of Mauna Kea and is one of the most remote places in Hawaii. This lake is a gorgeous place that has a long, cultural history, and has even been visited by royalty!

Located on Mauna Kea is a small, remote lake called Lake Waiau.

This lake measures 328 meters in diameter, but its depth changes depending on the season and rainfall. Sometimes reaching as deep as 6-8 feet, it can become as shallow as three feet deep in the summer heat.

Mauna Kea is the tallest point on the Hawaiian Islands.

The peak is 13,803 ft above sea level, and it’s also the second-highest peak on an island on the entire planet. This area frequently gets snow in the winter time, and Lake Waiau is the only glacially-formed lake in the mid-pacific.

The only way to reach this stunning lake is to drive to the summit and then enjoy a hike.

The trail is only one mile long, so not far, but you will be at a very high altitude. There is no shade or cover and it’s very easy to be sunburned.

Many hikers find that the lack of oxygen can make travel to the lake difficult.

Take your time, walk slowly, and enjoy the view, taking frequent breaks. It's also advised that you take a quick 30-minute stop at the Visitor’s Center when you arrive to help acclimate to the atmosphere before exploring.

This is also a sacred site for Hawaiians.

The Mauna Kea summit has long been considered sacred to the Hawaiian people. In the past, only priests and chieftains were allowed at the summit.

After the Kingdom of Hawaii was formed, Hawaiian royalty began to visit this sacred site.

In fact, in 1881, Queen Emma visited this stunning lake and bathed in its waters. It was the last time royalty visited Lake Waiau.
