Take a Hike to a Hawaii Overlook That’s Bigger Than the Superdome

Diamond Head State Monument in Oahu offers a popular, easy hike with stunning 360-degree views.

Oahu boasts some stunning views, and the vistas to be had from Diamond Head State Monument are some of the finest around. It takes a little effort to earn this views, but this short hike to a Hawaii overlook will bring you to one of the best viewing spots on the island, making the payoff well worth the work. In fact, I'd say this park a perfect day trip destination for anyone living on or visiting the island of Oahu. So grab your hiking shoes, some water, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen; let's head out on this epic trail—one we consider to be one of the best hikes in Hawaii.

Diamond Head State Monument is located just a few minutes east of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. The park is centered around—and named for—the massive crater of an extinct volcano. The bowl of the crater covers about 350 acres, which makes it nearly 30 times larger than the Superdome in New Orleans.

The crater was created during an eruption 300,000 years ago when the volcano erupted in a single blast, sending ash and fine particulates into the air which eventually hardened into the volcanic material called "tuff," which comprises the crater today. Long known as Lēʻahi to Native Hawaiians, the site became Diamond Head State Monument after World War II. The area encompasses military history, 360-degree views, and its historic hiking trail.

The trail, Diamond Head Summit Trail, carries a moderately challenging rating on AllTrails due to its 485 feet of elevation gain over the 0.8-mile ascent. The hike leads you to the top of the rim. The trail was constructed in 1908, thus allowing for more than a century of beautiful exploration of the area.

The trail is paved to start, before switchbacks, stairs, and then a tunnel. It’s a fun and interesting climb to the top. As I mentioned, the hike is fairly steep, but it’s easy to navigate, and the trail is well-marked. It is absolutely worth the effort, and most hikers complete it in just under an hour.

Be sure to bring sun protection and plenty of water, as there is no cover for part of the hike. This is the perfect hike if you love a good view and don’t mind a short (uphill) excursion.

Bring the whole family on this manageable, yet unforgettable, trail. It’s the most popular hike on the island and the best one you’ll climb in Oahu. The trail is open daily from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking and entrance fees are required for non-Hawaii residents over the age of three. Hawaii residents with ID park and enter for free.
