With phenomenal views, incredible white sand beaches, the best hiking around, charming lighthouses and even awe-inspiring coastal tide pools, there is no doubt that the Hawaiian Islands are an absolute paradise. And while the entire state is full of amazing places to discover, there is one magical spot where you’ll find a stunning panoramic, 360-degree view sure to impress. The best part? You can find this view at the summit of a short, 2-mile paved hike on the southeastern tip of the island of Oahu. This is the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail, and it’s an absolute dream.
Located on the southeastern point of Oahu within the Kaiwi Scenic Shoreline is the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail, a short and sweet two-mile hike on a fully paved trail to a historic lighthouse.
The paved trail is perfect for the entire family, gaining approximately 500 feet in elevation over the course of a mile.
This magical spot is home to one of Oahu’s most popular hikes for visitors and locals alike — as well as some of the best views you’ll find anywhere on the island.
The hike also features stunning panoramic views of the historic Makapu’u Lighthouse…
The historic red-roof lighthouse was built in 1909, but is off-limits to actually visit.

The gates to the trailhead open daily at 7 a.m. and close at 6:45 p.m. For the most rewarding experience, visit in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. Bring plenty of water, and wear sunscreen. Oh, and don't forget your camera!
