My Favorite Scenic Hikes in Oahu for Families with Young Adventurers
These family-friendly hikes have been some of our favorite trails, each offering something perfectly suited for little adventurers.
Exploring Oahu’s natural beauty is one of my family’s favorite ways to spend time together. My husband, our five-year-old daughter, and I have had countless adventures on the island, soaking in its lush landscapes, waterfalls, and ocean views. These family-friendly hikes in Hawaii have been some of our favorite trails, each offering something perfectly suited for little adventurers.
Waimea Falls Trail
- Location: Waimea Valley
- Distance: 1.5 miles (round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy
Waimea Falls Trail is a dream for families with young children. The paved, stroller-friendly path meanders through a stunning botanical garden filled with native Hawaiian plants. The highlight, of course, is the serene Waimea Falls at the end of the trail, where you can take a refreshing swim in the waterfall’s pool (life jackets are provided). It’s an easy and enjoyable way to immerse your family in Hawaii’s natural beauty. General admission is $20.00 for ages 13 and up and $15.00 for ages 2-12.
Pro Tip: Bring swimwear and towels for a dip in the pool. The trail is well-shaded, but sunscreen is always a good idea!
Manoa Falls Trail
- Location: Manoa Valley
- Distance: 1.6 miles (round trip)
- Difficulty: Moderate
For a rainforest adventure that feels like stepping into a storybook, Manoa Falls Trail is a must. The hike winds through a dense tropical jungle, complete with towering bamboo groves and lush ferns. At the end, you’ll be rewarded with views of the stunning 150-foot Manoa Falls. The trail can get muddy after rain, so good footwear is essential, but the scenery is worth it. This trail is ideal for slightly older kids or younger ones carried in a child carrier. This is a really nice trail to do on a hot day, as there is plenty of shade!
Pro Tip: Early mornings are less crowded, and don’t forget bug spray!
Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden
- Location: Kaneohe
- Distance: Varies
- Difficulty: Easy
This tranquil oasis is one of Oahu’s hidden gems. With 400 acres of lush gardens and stroller-friendly walking paths, Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden is perfect for little explorers. The trails loop around a serene lake where kids can feed ducks or fish (be sure to bring some bread or crackers!). Admission is free, and the peaceful setting makes it an ideal spot for a relaxing family outing. My daughter and her friend spent over two hours frolicking through the Garden, identifying all of the amazing plants labeled along the walk.
Pro Tip: Pack a picnic and take your time exploring. The gardens are open daily, rain or shine.
Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail
- Location: Southeastern Oahu
- Distance: 2 miles (round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy
This trail is one of our best-loved for its stunning ocean views and paved path, making it accessible for strollers and young hikers (although it is very steep!) Along the way, you’ll see the historic Makapu’u Lighthouse and panoramic vistas of Oahu’s southeastern coastline. If you’re visiting in winter, keep an eye out for humpback whales breaching in the distance. Although this was our favorite trail, it was also the most difficult for us out of all the ones on this list.
Pro Tip: Wear hats and bring plenty of water, as there’s little shade on the trail. Or better yet, come at the end of the day!
Makapu’u Point Lookout
- Location: Near Makapu’u Lighthouse
- Distance: Minimal walking
- Difficulty: Very Easy
If you’re short on time or have little ones who tire easily, Makapu’u Point Lookout is a fantastic alternative to the full trail. This stop-off offers breathtaking views of the coastline with minimal walking required. It’s the perfect way to take in the scenery without committing to a longer hike. We only had to walk around 5 minutes to get some beautiful views. It has much of the same view as the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail, except for the lighthouse, and a whole lot easier.
Pro Tip: Bring binoculars during whale-watching season to catch an up-close glimpse!
Tips for a Fun and Safe Adventure
- Essentials: Water, sunscreen, and comfortable footwear are must-haves for all trails.
- Timing: Morning hikes often mean cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
- Snacks: A small stash of snacks can keep your little adventurers energized.
From waterfalls to botanical gardens and ocean vistas, these trails offer a variety of experiences for families. These are my favorite scenic hikes in Oahu! Whether your kids are stroller-bound or eager to explore on foot, Oahu has something for everyone. Happy hiking!
