Chasing Ocean Views: My Adventure on Oahu’s Ka’iwi Shoreline Trail
My November adventure on Oahu's Ka'iwi Shoreline Trail was the perfect blend of exercise and nature. Plus, it's family-friendly, too!
Sometimes, the most breathtaking views require a little extra effort, and that’s exactly what I discovered on my hike up Oahu’s Ka’iwi Shoreline Trail. This steep, paved path might not be the easiest for little legs, but the ocean vistas at the top make every step worth it. My husband, 5-year-old, and I tackled this adventure together, and while it wasn’t without its challenges, it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.
I’d heard the trail could get hot and crowded during the day, so we planned for a later start, arriving around 4:45 p.m. It was the perfect time to go—the air was cooler, the crowds had thinned, and the golden hour light made everything look even more magical. If you’re planning to visit, I’d highly recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat.
The Ka’iwi Shoreline Trail, also known as the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail, is a 2-mile round-trip hike that’s entirely paved. While the smooth surface makes it more accessible, don’t let that fool you—it’s a steady incline from start to finish. The grade is relentless, and while my daughter powered through like a champ, there were moments when we both had to stop and catch our breath.
There aren’t many spots to sit and rest along the way, and shade is almost nonexistent. Sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are absolute musts. I also highly recommend wearing sneakers for traction on the incline; flip-flops aren’t going to cut it here.
For families with kids, there are a few things to keep in mind. Some sections of the trail have steep drop-offs, so if you’ve got little ones who like to dart ahead or explore, you’ll want to keep a close eye on them. While the path itself is wide and well-maintained, the steep edges can make parents a bit nervous.
Also, there are no bathrooms at the trailhead, so make sure everyone takes care of business before you arrive. Trust me, you don’t want to be halfway up the trail and scrambling for options!
All the effort is rewarded the moment you reach the top. The views from the Ka’iwi Shoreline Trail are nothing short of spectacular. The sparkling blue Pacific stretches out as far as the eye can see, and on clear days, you can spot the islands of Molokai and Lanai in the distance. The contrast between the rugged cliffs and the endless ocean is simply stunning.
The historic Makapu’u Lighthouse, a bright white and red beacon perched on the cliffs, adds a pop of color to the scene. My daughter loved seeing the lighthouse cling tenaciously to the side of the cliff.

- Trailhead Location: The trail begins at the Ka’iwi State Scenic Shoreline, located off Kalanianaole Highway. Parking is free but can fill up quickly during peak times.

Hiking the Ka’iwi Shoreline Trail was a workout, no doubt about it, but the reward of those jaw-dropping ocean views made every step worth it. Sharing this adventure with my daughter was the best part — her excitement and awe at the scenery reminded me just how magical these moments can be.
