A Bit Of An Unexpected Natural Wonder, Few People Know There Are 100 Species Of Orchids Hiding In Florida

Here in Florida, we’re extremely proud of our natural wonders. Part of what makes Florida so special involves nature, whether it’s the mangrove swamps, the stunningly rare coral reefs, or the miles of pristine beaches. But what many people might not know is that Florida is also home to over 100 different species of orchids! Many orchids thrive in the heat and humidity our great state offers, and we have the perfect place to see the most diverse species of orchids native to Florida.

Out of the nearly 200 species of orchids that are known to grow in the United States, nearly half of those are native to Florida. One of the greatest places to see some of these rare orchids is Marie Selby Botanical Garden in Sarasota, Florida.

This unique botanical garden has one of the most diverse collections of orchids and bromeliads across the globe, with thousands of species represented here.

Because The Selby Garden specializes in epiphytes, or known as air plants, orchids, bromeliads, and gesneriads are all included.

Every fall, Selby Gardens celebrates the beauty and magic of the orchid with a widely coveted orchid show.

But the good news is that even when the orchid show is over, anyone visiting The Selby Garden can see different orchids bloom throughout the year.

Visiting the botanical garden outside of orchid viewing is also a treat, with 15 acres of pure sprawling natural beauty.
