The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Florida
Half oceanfront, half maritime forest, this easy loop trail at Little Talbot Island State Park is perfect for quality time with a loved one.
Valentine's Day can mean many different things to many different people, but there's often one common theme: gratitude for a special person in your life. And we can think of no better place to spend quality, one-on-one time with your person than the Dune Ridge Loop at Little Talbot Island State Park. This hike features everything we love about living in Florida—breathtaking beaches, wildlife, maritime forests—and it will undoubtedly make you feel even closer to your hiking companion.
Little Talbot Island State Park is located just north of Jacksonville. It offers an impressive five miles of unspoiled beachfront; in fact, it's one of the last remaining undeveloped barrier islands in northeast Florida. And while beaches certainly aren't rare here in Florida, there's something special about this one. In addition to the pristine, sugar-white sand and rolling waves, you'll also notice the sun-bleached tree roots that appear along the surf.
If it's your first visit to the park, the Dune Ridge Loop offers the perfect introduction. This 3.7-mile circuit trail is considered easy and takes most explorers a little over an hour to complete. But trust us when we say that this is one trail you won't want to rush. The trail varies in terrain, ranging from the busy shoreline to the quiet of ancient sand dunes and even vibrant, dense forests. You'll find that each setting sets the stage for awe, joy, and wonder: emotions that lend themselves perfectly to a romantic hike.
One of my favorite parts about hiking near the beach is the smell of the salty air. Even in the middle of winter, it's such an invigorating element that makes me feel instantly connected to the coast. As the forest opens up to the ocean, you'll be greeted by a salty breeze and an unbelievable view. But don't forget to look down, either, you might just spot a sandollar.
This trail is certainly a local favorite, and for good reason. The spacious beach, well-marked trail, and stunning scenery can be enjoyed year-round. Hikers recommend timing your visit with low tide, so the sand is easier to walk on. If you do happen to venture during warmer temperatures, bug spray is highly recommended.
