Fall is the time of year that invites us to embrace the peaceful beauty around us. As we say goodbye to the sunny days of summer in Florida and welcome crisper temperatures, we all enjoy adjusting our schedules to match the transformation. After a summer of never-ending activities, I am ready for slow-paced days soaking up Mother Nature’s artwork. And just because Florida is not a leaf peeper’s paradise, it doesn’t mean that we are not rewarded handsomely with the beauty of autumn. 

In fact, there are several destinations here where fall explodes and reveals its magic. One place in particular is the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee. Peaceful strolls through the lovely gardens are what nature lovers live for, but leaf peepers can find their joy here, too. This fall, plan a trip to the most impressive, underrated state park in Florida and be prepared to be inspired by autumn's glory.

When you visit the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in the fall, time almost seems to slow down. The 1,200-acre sanctuary is surrounded by tranquil waterways, peaceful woodlands, and charming gardens, making it ideal for nature lovers. There is no rush here; it’s just you, the soothing rhythms of nature, and the gentle calmness of the season.

Although the low-key park is within the bustling city of Tallahassee, when you're here, you’ll feel like you’re miles away from the outside world. Maclay Gardens is mostly known for having one of the best botanical gardens in Florida. So, of course, I’d recommend carving out time to explore the ornamental gardens with brick-paved pathways, reflection pools, and lovely blooms. You’ll need your camera to capture pics inside this peaceful oasis. This gorgeous haven is a photographer's dream come true.

While the gardens will inspire you, the park has more to offer than that. With two lakes, Lake Hall and Lake Overstreet, it’s a playground for water enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, and paddling on Lake Hall. The 144-acre Lake Overstreet is a gorgeous sanctuary surrounded by miles of multi-use trails. There is also a visitor center, museum, picnic areas, and a playground for the little ones. 

But what makes this park truly special is how it unexpectedly comes alive in autumn. Obviously, the Sunshine State isn’t a prime location for leaf peepers. But don’t let that stop you from visiting this destination. You’ll be delighted to know that during the peak of the season, around mid-November, the hardwoods inside the park light up with bursts of fall colors. Be sure to plan your trip at the right time, so you’ll be rewarded with autumn's magic. 

Along Lake Overstreet, the fall hues are typically muted but beautiful all the same. If you can imagine yourself relaxing on a bench, soaking up views of the gorgeous Spanish-draped oaks, colorful trees, and the tranquil waterways, then this is the right place for you. Fall is all about peaceful stillness, and this park certainly delivers on that.

If you hike inside the wooded areas, especially along the five-mile Ravine and Lake Trail Loop, expect to see splashes of fall foliage along the way. Unlike popular leaf-peeping destinations, the foliage isn’t dramatic, but the subtle transformation will still impress you. Don’t be surprised if you forget that you’re in Florida — even if it’s just for a fleeting moment.

I could spend hours wandering around this beautiful state park in Florida, and chances are you will too. The good news is, it’s less crowded during the fall, so there is no need to hurry. You can take your time and truly enjoy the gentleness of the season. Plus, the weather is pleasant with little to no rain. Even better news? You’ll discover some hidden gems as you hike. Be on the lookout for the fairytale doors and gnomes, and you’ll also find nature’s artwork in full bloom.
