Recap of the worst hurricanes in Florida history and their impacts.
The Sunshine State is a wonderful place to live and is celebrated for its warm weather and beautiful scenery. The downside of Florida's coastal locale, though, is that the state often finds itself in the eye of many a tropical storm. If you live in our state, you have probably experienced a hurricane — at least to some extent. Today we're recapping some of the worst hurricanes in Florida history:
1. Hurricane Donna, 1960
Some of you might remember this hurricane from 1960 that caused storm surges up to 13 feet in the Keys. It also sustained its deadly hurricane force winds over our state for longer than any other hurricane so far. Donna caused the most property damage in Florida up to that point, with $350 million in damage. Thirteen people died and hundreds of people were injured due to the effects of Hurricane Donna.
2. Hurricane Cleo, 1964
Hurricane Cleo caused major damage from Miami to Melbourne, leaving more than 600,000 area homes without power and sparking at least two dozen separate blazes in Miami.
3. Hurricane Andrew, 1992
One of the most notorious Florida hurricanes, most readers will have at least some memory of the devastation left behind Hurricane Andrew in the early '90s. Andrew was a Category 5 hurricane — the most destructive hurricane to hit Florida. It was the fifth costliest hurricane in our country's history, with damages of more than $25 billion.
4. Hurricane Charley, 2004
Hurricane Charley caught people off-guard when it turned toward Northwest Florida unexpectedly. It ultimately caused 29 direct and indirect fatalities, making it one of the worst hurricanes in Florida history.
