The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Jacksonville, Florida for an Outdoor Adventure
Want to bring your fur friend with you when you explore Jacksonville, Florida? Here are some dog-friendly hikes to consider.
If you're anything like me, you want to take your fur friends everywhere. I'm always on the hunt for things to do with dogs in Florida, from hitting dog-friendly beaches to outdoor breweries. My dogs love to be outside, which is why I'm especially interested in the best dog-friendly hikes. On a recent trip up to the northern part of the state, I began my hunt for dog-welcoming hiking trails in Jacksonville. Here are a few of my favorites that I found.
1. Tillie Fowler Park Island Trail
The Tillie Fowler Park Island Trail is tucked away inside Tillie K Fowler Regional Park, clocking in at 2.2 miles in length. Because of the shade and the boardwalk style of this hike, it's perfect for dogs! The variety of terrain—including sandy paths and wooden walkways—keeps the hike interesting. There’s even an off-leash dog park nearby where your pup can run around before or after the hike.
2. Julington Durbin Creek Preserve Yellow and White Loop
This 2,000-acre preserve offers over six miles of dog-friendly trails, including the Yellow and White Loop. Generally considered an easy route, this trail is a bit longer than others on this list, coming in at 5.6 miles in length. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Just make sure to keep your dogs on a leash as you hike!
3. Betz-Tiger Point Preserve Red and Yellow Loop
Trek this 3.5-mile loop trail near Jacksonville, Florida, with your fur friends any time of year. The Betz-Tiger Point Preserve Red and Yellow Loop includes wide open trails and gorgeous weather, so this one you might want to revisit over and over. Just keep in mind that Alltrails notes this trail is mostly well-maintained, but some sections towards the end can be overgrown with palms on the path. So you'll want to be mindful of ticks! Make sure to pick up some mosquito and tick repellent spray from REI.
4. Castaway Island Reserve Walk
Possibly our shortest hike on this list, this one is good for beautiful views without much of a strenuous lift. At just 1.2 miles in length, the Castaway Island Reserve trail features a mix of boardwalks and natural paths winding through salt marshes, with scenic water views along the way. Informational signs provide insight into the local ecosystem, making it both a relaxing and educational experience for humans, too.
5. Big Talbot Island Timucuan Trail
And finally, the Big Talbot Island Timucuan Trail is one of our favorites. At 6.3 miles in length, this trail winds along the coast providing a blend of scenic forest and coastal beauty. Compared to more crowded hiking spots, this trail offers a peaceful retreat into nature, making it great to bring your fur friend! Plus, the wooded sections provide plenty of shade, making it a comfortable trek even on warm days.
