The Little Known Hiking Path in Delaware Is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year
Discover the Millstone Loop, a little-known hiking path in Delaware at White Clay Creek State Park. Enjoy an easy, scenic trail that's perfect for families.
Looking for a fantastic way to kick off your year of outdoor adventures? Then you need to check out White Clay Creek State Park in northern Delaware. This park is a true haven for nature lovers, with plenty of trails to explore. But there's one hidden gem we think is perfect for your first hike of the year: the Millstone Loop. This little-known hiking path is a winner, especially if you're looking for a trail that's not too challenging but still offers a wonderful dose of nature. Let's discover why this delightful trail is one of our favorites.
Getting there is simple. Just head over to the Carpenter Recreation Area, and you'll find the trailhead ready and waiting. There's a small parking area available. The loop itself is just 1.3 miles long, so it's totally manageable, even if you haven't hit the trails in a while.
One of the things we love most about this trail is how accessible it is. It's mostly flat with just a gentle incline of less than 130 feet, making it a great choice for families with little ones. And when you come back in the warmer months, you'll be happy to know that most of the trail is shaded by trees, which is a real bonus on those hot summer days. Oh, and did we mention you get to cross a little stream a couple of times? It's always a fun surprise, especially for the kids.
About halfway through the loop, you'll come across Millstone Pond – a true highlight of the hike. This is where you can spot wonderful wildlife like turtles, frogs, and all sorts of birds. It's also a great spot to climb around on the rocks and just enjoy being outdoors. Speaking of rocks, there's a really neat rock outcropping near the pond that's just waiting to be explored. Now, here's a little insider tip: If you're hiking with young kids, we recommend going counterclockwise. This way, you get the steeper part of the trail out of the way first, and it's a more gradual walk back to the start.
Along the way, you may spot local wildlife such as deer, birds, or even the occasional fox. White Clay Creek State Park spans about 3,600 acres and provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation beyond hiking. Visitors can enjoy fishing, biking, and even birdwatching, with several designated spots throughout the park. The park is also rich in history, with remnants of old mills and historical markers.
So, if you're looking for a little-known hiking path that's perfect for your first hike of the year, look no further than the Millstone Loop at White Clay Creek State Park. But don't stop there! This expansive park offers so much more to explore, from its diverse network of trails and scenic beauty to family-friendly amenities like playgrounds and picnic areas.
