Grab the Ear Warmers for This Hike in Delaware That’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold

Pull on your ear warmers to brave the chill on this enchanting cold-weather hike in Delaware that's kid and dog-friendly.

Some of us spend the coldest days of the year counting down until the return of spring's blossoming wildflowers, and the melody of the birds, but plenty of others embrace every chilled moment of winter. Even if you’re not exactly a winter person, you might feel a little differently after bundling up, slipping on a pair of cozy ear warmers, and heading out on this cold-weather hike in Delaware.

Tulip and Hidden Pond Trail may conjure images of warm spring days, but this pretty path in Brandywine Creek State Park transforms into an enchanting winter wonderland during the colder months. Whether you feel like bundling the kids up and bringing your pups or you prefer alone time in nature, you’ll find this 2.1-mile loop trail is an ideal way to spend an hour or so.

Since the trail’s difficulty hovers between easy and moderate, expect to deal with a few obstacles, including rocky terrain and exposed tree roots. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are a must but don’t just rely on your footwear. Avoid twisting an ankle by paying attention to where you’re walking and taking extra care when there’s snow. If you return in the warmer months, check yourself and your pup, if you’re bringing him, for ticks, and bring plenty of insect repellant.

Beautiful in all four seasons, the Tulip and Hidden Pond Trail is simply magical with a light dusting of snow. Meander along the winding path as you marvel at the snow-capped trees (if you’re fortunate enough to hike after a recent snowfall). Keep an eye out for the tree trunk, by the water, with a hole right through the middle. (You’ll know it when you see it.) The path journeys along the creek, over wooden footbridges, and through forested areas. While you might not cross paths with much wildlife during the winter, Brandywine Creek State Park is home to frogs, turtles, owls, and woodpeckers.

Brandywine Creek State Park has ample parking, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot. You must pay an admission fee per vehicle with separate rates for Delaware residents and out-of-state visitors. Fees are only charged from March 1 through November 30.
