My Favorite Park in Delaware Is a Little-Known Paradise for Biking

Bellevue State Park might not be the most popular state park in Delaware, but it’s one of my favorites. It doesn’t have stunning coastlines and beaches like Cape Henlopen State Park, nor does it see millions of visitors every year. But honestly, I don’t mind, as this urban oasis in Wilmington is less crowded, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity for solitude, especially if you’re biking through its quiet paths.

The park is known for its free summer concerts and horseback riding, but cyclists flock here as well. After all, with miles of paved trails and its connection to the East Coast Greenway, one of the longest bike routes in the country, it’s obvious why this little-known Delaware state park has become such a popular place to ride.

You’ll find Bellevue State Park on the northern end of Wilmington, nestled inside a suburban community near the Delaware River. The 331-acre oasis was the former estate of William Du Pont, Jr., a prominent businessman and horse racing enthusiast. He left behind historical landmarks, including Bellevue Hall Mansion (the park’s namesake), the Percheron Barn, and the Mount Pleasant Schoolhouse. You’ll also see lovely, well-manicured gardens, a fishing pond, and an equestrian farm, just to name a few. 

There is so much to do and see here. Some of the amenities include miles of multi-use trails, horseback riding, an 18-hole disc golf course, playgrounds for the little ones, tennis courts, a free summer concert venue, and an arboretum. 

But that’s not all. If you enjoy biking, you’re in for a real treat. I’m a casual biker, and I love that there are easy bike trails here that the entire family can enjoy. One of the best bike routes in Delaware is the Northern Delaware Greenway, a designated National Recreation Trail that connects Bellevue State Park to Alapocas Run State Park and other local parks. The trail winds through serene woodlands with river views, across boardwalks and bridges, and through Wilmington’s urban landscape. As a fully paved, family-friendly path, it’s perfect for a fun ride on bikes or foot.

For moms with strollers, wheelchair users, and beginner bikers, it’s best to explore the first five miles of the route. It’s scenic and flat with little to no steep sections. Hikers, if you’d rather skip the multi-use trails, opt for the Bellevue State Park Pond Loop and soak up the views of the picturesque pond. This is one of the lesser-known trails inside the park, so if you’re seeking solitude, this route is for you. 

After you’re done riding or hiking, find a spot to have a picnic, or even better, spend a quiet day fishing by the lake. You can also stroll through the pretty gardens or play a round of disc golf. A day trip here is one you won’t forget. The mix of historical sites, nature, biking trails, and other recreation opportunities makes this state park worthy of a trip. While it’s loved by locals, it’s often overlooked by folks visiting the area, making this underrated playground a true hidden gem in Delaware.
