Delaware is home to numerous state parks, reserves, and even one national park. While parks like Trap Pond State Park and Bellevue State Park are among the most popular, there are a few lesser-known and less crowded parks you can escape to. For more peace and solitude, consider spending time at Blackbird Creek Reserve, a little-known park in Delaware.
Covering an area of 1,180 acres, Blackbird Creek Reserve is a lesser-known Delaware park. It's the perfect place to explore the next time you want to recharge and connect with nature.
Blackbird Creek Reserve is part of the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve. It can be found along the Delaware Bayshore Byway, a designated National Scenic Byway leading through some of the quieter, wilder, and less-traveled parts of the state.
As you explore Blackbird Creek Reserve, you will encounter freshwater wetlands (both tidal and non-tidal), brackish-water marshes, agricultural land, and forests. Its diverse landscape attracts a variety of birds and wildlife.
Visitors can trek through the property on five miles of trails including Blackbird Creek Red Mile Trail, a 1.1-mile easy loop. Expect to see lots of wildlife along this trail!
Among the birds you may encounter are bald eagles, wild turkeys, great blue herons, and osprey. As for mammals, this quiet park is ideal for whitetail deer, river otters, and many other species.
Plant species are abundant here as well and you'll see a mix of both hardwood and softwood trees as well as many shrub species throughout.
If you wish to explore Blackbird Creek on the water, there is a canoe/kayak launch. The slow-moving waters make the creek a very peaceful place for a paddle and wildlife viewing from the water.
Whether you explore by land or by water, Blackbird Creek Reserve is a wonderful place to get away from it all!
