There's so much history in Connecticut to learn about. We're lucky to live somewhere where so much of the past is preserved for us to witness. There's no shortage of museums in the Nutmeg State, whether you're looking for a hyper-specific focus on a particular topic or just want to learn about the way things were "back in the day." One of my favorite ways to learn about an area's history is to visit a historic home museum. When you're young and dragged to historic houses on field trips, it's hard to appreciate these places, but I find visiting as an adult to be so rewarding. Seeing all the vintage furniture and antiques as they would have been back in the day is a downright magical experience that feels like stepping into a time machine. One of the best historic homes in Connecticut is the Butler-McCook House and Garden in Hartford. Here, you'll find both a fascinating home and a beautifully-manicured garden. Check it out:
The Butler-McCook is quite special. It's right on Main Street in Hartford. Not only is it the only remaining 18th-century home on Main Street, it's also the oldest home in all of Hartford.
A guided tour of this beautiful home will give you a glimpse of life in the 19th century. The home is decorated just as it was when the McCook family lived here.
The family traveled extensively and had stunning collections of art, samurai armor, and furniture that's now on display here.
The jewel of the property is the restored Victorian garden.
Lectures on a variety of topics are presented here throughout the year.
This is such a beautiful historic home museum in Hartford, CT where you can feel like you're taking a step back in time.
