This Connecticut Bird Sanctuary Makes For The Perfect Peaceful Day Trip

One thing that never ceases to amaze me about the Nutmeg State is how much preserved land we have. Sure, we're among the smallest states, and we're actually among the most densely-populated, but we also have a shocking amount of land devoted to state parks and state forests. No matter where you are in Connecticut, you're never too far from nature, and it's one of the things that makes our area of the country so special. There's no shortage of great places to go hiking in Connecticut, and the site we're featuring today is just perfect for anyone looking for an easy, peaceful stroll into nature - and perhaps a glimpse of some feathered friends. The Bent of the River Audubon Center is a 700-acre preserve in Southbury, CT that's amazing for anyone looking to escape into the wilderness.

This year-round oasis was established to promote biodiversity in the area, and you'll find an array of flora and fauna throughout.

Like the other Audubon Centers in Connecticut, there are no trail blazes or interpretive signs here. The land is considered to be "mild wilderness," so trails are maintained, but still make you feel like you're out in nature.

The 15 miles of trails here wind through a variety of landscapes, including fields and forests.

It's a great spot for bird watching, as many species live here.

This is a truly stunning area, and most of the trails are wide and flat, making them perfect for heading out with the whole family.
