Alamere Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls you’ll ever see. In fact, it's easily one of the best waterfall hikes in Northern California. This waterfall flows over a cliff, across a sandy beach right into the Pacific Ocean. It’s really a sight to behold! But, it does take some work to get there. Located in Point Reyes National Seashore, there are three trails that lead to the falls. The hike that starts at the Palomarin Trailhead and goes along the Coast Trail is the shortest at 13.7 miles. This trail offers beautiful views along the way and cool ocean breezes that make it feel easier.
The out-and-back trail is generally considered a challenging route, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,500 feet.
It takes an average of 5 hours and 49 minutes to complete. We recommend stopping to take photos along the way, which will likely extend your hike time.
The Coast Trail starts at the Palomarin Trailhead, accessible via the parking lot at the end of Mesa Road outside Bolinas.
It's advisable to arrive early on weekends as the lot fills up quickly.
The hike offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, including sights of the Farallon Islands on clear days.
You'll also pass several picturesque lakes: Bass Lake, Pelican Lake, Ocean Lake, and Wildcat Lake.
For safety reasons, avoid the unmaintained Alamere Falls Trail due to hazards such as crumbling cliffs, poison oak, and ticks.
Instead, stick to the marked Coast Trail for a safer experience.
From the Palomarin Trailhead, follow the Coast Trail northwest as it meanders along ocean cliffs for about one mile. The trail then heads inland, dropping into a valley and then ascending switchbacks. After climbing over a pass, you'll pass small ponds and reach Bass Lake after 2.8 miles. Continue for another 0.6 miles to view Pelican Lake.
At 4.2 miles, you'll reach the Ocean Lake Loop Trail junction. Stay right to continue on the Coast Trail, or turn left to follow the loop trail past Ocean Lake, reconnecting after 1.1 miles. After the junction, follow the Coast Trail for 0.2 miles to Wildcat Campground.
From Wildcat Campground, follow the well-worn trail on the south side to the beach.
Walk south for 1.1 miles during low tide to reach the falls. If waves reach the bluffs, wait for the tide to recede.
Visit Alamere Falls during low tide for safe beach access.
Check tide predictions and surf conditions via the National Weather Service before your hike, and be prepared for a long hike and potential wait times if tides are not favorable. It should be noted that dogs are not allowed on this trail.
The Palomarin Trail to Alamere Falls is a challenging but immensely rewarding hike, offering some of the best coastal scenery in Northern California. With proper preparation and respect for natural conditions, this adventure can be one of the highlights of your outdoor experiences in Marin County. It's certainly one of the best waterfall hikes in Northern California.
