It’s what I love most about the Natural State: there is always a new treasure waiting to be discovered. For example, take this cool cave hiding inside Bayyari Park in Springdale. Unless you live in the area, chances are, you’ve never heard of Coyote Cave. It's tucked away on a rocky trail inside the foothills of the Ozarks, and you’re going to want to check out this hidden natural wonder in Arkansas for yourself.

Where To Find Coyote Cave In Arkansas

Springdale is one of the largest cities in Arkansas, but it’s not the first place that comes to my mind when seeking outdoor adventure. It’s mostly popular for mountain bikers who love to ride the network of trails inside Fitzgerald Mountain. And that’s exactly where you’ll find Coyote Cave. This cave is one of the highlights of the trail system and the definition of a true hidden gem.

The easiest way to access Coyote Cave is from Bayyari Park on Deer Valley Street in Springdale. The 15-acre park is the gateway to the vast multi-use trail system that includes Coyote Cave and Butterfield Loop, Old Wire Trail, and Stagecoach Loop, just to name a few. If you’re an avid rider, you’ll be delighted to know that the trail has something for all experience levels. So, feel free to bring your mountain bike to explore the scenic terrain. 

What To Expect Along The Trail

Hikers, no need to worry, as this three-mile loop trail has plenty of fun for you, too. There are overlooks, towering bluffs, large rock formations, caves, and you’ll be surrounded by a canopy of trees. It will take you about an hour to complete, but I recommend that you take your time to enjoy the hidden gems along the way. The trail is rocky in certain areas, so don’t leave home without your hiking boots. Also, it’s both kid and dog-friendly, so they can come along on this journey. Make sure the dogs remain on the leash, though.

Why This Hidden Cave Feels Like A Secret Ozark Escape

When you get to Coyote Cave, you’ll immediately notice the large openings leading to its crevices. Coyote Cave has multiple openings, making this hidden natural wonder in Arkansas feel like a stone labyrinth at times. Even though these hiking trails in Springdale are well-known to locals, you could easily find yourself the only one on the trail. If you want to increase your odds of beating the crowds, visit early in the morning or during the weekdays.

After you’re done exploring this natural wonder in Arkansas, you can continue back to the parking lot. Or better yet, spend the day exploring the other trails. There are over 10 miles of trails at Bayyari Park, so you've got plenty of opportunities for adventure. What’s more, Bayyari Park has a playground, picnic areas, and grills, so this could easily turn into an all-day outing.

Pro Tip: The Coyote Cave and Butterfield Trails Loop is extremely rocky, so be careful and watch your step. And please listen out for bikers as you trek. Also, it won’t hurt to download AllTrails, since there are several connecting trails inside the park. It can get tricky to stay on track. 

What To Know Before Visiting Bayyari Park

Bayyari Park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. While this is heavily geared towards bikers, hikers can still enjoy the trails. Regardless of whether you’re on two wheels or two feet, make sure you check yourself (and pups!) for ticks. Tick season in Arkansas runs from March through October, with peak tick season lasting through the summer.
