Beat Cabin Fever At This Scenic Montana Viewpoint Where You Can See For Miles

Mount Sentinel in Missoula offers a moderate hike with breathtaking views of the city and surrounding natural beauty.

Even the most introverted Montanan needs to get out and about once and a while, if only for fresh air. And if you happen to live in the Missoula area, that might mean exploring a local trail that allows you to see the entire city from the top. This spring, stretch your legs at Mount Sentinel, an exhilarating hike with a viewpoint that's well worth the climb.

Mount Sentinel, which was originally known as Mount Woody, is located just east of the University of Montana in Missoula.

The mountain actually has several trails, and locals love being able to hike without even leaving the city.

The Mount Sentinel via Hellgate Ridgeline Trail is a three-mile hike at K. Williams Natural Trail Area.

And while the climb to the top is certain to leave you breathless, the trail is ranked as moderate, and most Montanans can make it to the top.

To find the trailhead, just look for signs for the famous M Trail.

The M Trail, a local favorite, counts for the first mile of this hike.

Keep hiking uphill for the best views.

After another mile, you'll reach the top of Mount Sentinel.

The top of this little but mighty mountain will show you unparalleled views of the city of Missoula and all the rugged natural beauty around it.

You'll see Mount Jumbo and the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness to the north, and the Bitterroot Mountains to the south.

From the top of Sentinel, you can either head back down the way you came or follow Crazy Canyon Trail into Pattee Canyon.

Just make sure you stop and take it all in at the top for a while first.

Hiking anywhere is good for the body, but hiking in Montana is good for the soul.

And you won't even have to leave the city limits to enjoy this trail.

Do you have a favorite hiking trail in Montana? Nothing tops a nice, brisk walk through nature.
